In most parts of the world, pictures of the whole family together are special. Unless it's a gathering for a somber occasion, people are usually smiling and laughing, which conveys a joyous mood and makes them photos to treasure in photo albums or display in frames.
But sometimes, family portraits can be memorable for other reasons.
For example, here's a family portrait by TikTok user ぶラジャー10 burajā 10 (bura__10), who posts their everyday life with their 9 cousins on TikTok.
The video is captioned with the message: "You thought it was a lovely family portrait, when in fact..."
Ten cousins and their grandmother are posing for a family portrait. The first photo has everyone smiling, but in the second photo, only the family matriarch is smiling, while everyone else is... Watch the video and see for yourself:
Hilariously, at the moment the photo was shot, all ten cousins had agreed to make the most preposterous funny faces they could muster. Their grandmother was completely oblivious to the whole charade.
The occasion was their grandmother's 77th birthday. In Japanese culture, the ages of 60, 70, 77, 80, 90, 99, 100, 108, and 111 are considered special milestones and are often celebrated (especially above 70) with family gatherings.
Usually, it's considered bad manners to put on a funny face in a family portrait, but this is clearly not a typical Japanese family!
