From furniture and buildings to everyday items like tableware, wood has found its place in numerous aspects of daily life. In Japanese cuisine, where even the beauty of tableware is considered part of the experience, wooden dishes are often used—particularly bowls for soups and other dishes.

Wood also plays a vital role in Japanese architecture.

Examples range from ancient temples like Hōryū-ji in Nara Prefecture to modern structures, including the main pavilion of Expo 2025 in Osaka, said to be one of the world’s largest wooden buildings. Even with the emergence of new construction materials, Japan’s deep-rooted trust in wood has remained unchanged.

While there are other materials that offer excellent strength, durability, and versatility in terms of shaping, Japan still relies heavily on wood. So, what makes wood so special here?

From architecture to tableware: the versatility and characteristics of Japanese wood

One reason wood continues to be treasured in Japan is the wide variety of tree species available.

Japan’s distinct four seasons and warm, humid climate provide an ideal environment for forests to flourish. Across the country, you can find a range of natural forests featuring coniferous and broadleaf species, as well as vast plantations of Sugi (Japanese cedar), Hinoki (Japanese cypress), Karamatsu (Japanese larch), and Todomatsu (fir), which together cover about two-thirds of Japan’s land area.

Hinoki and Sugi, both native to Japan, have been used as timber for centuries.

Hinoki, in particular, is known for its pleasant fragrance and exceptional durability, making it highly valued as a high-quality wood. Indeed, many structures have been built using it, the most famous being Hōryū-ji.

Often referred to as the world’s oldest wooden building, Hōryū-ji has withstood the passage of over 1,000 years, preserving its original form to this day. The temple stands as proof of Hinoki’s remarkable durability, which allows it to withstand natural disasters, as well as its strong resistance to insects that would typically cause decay.

In addition to temples and shrines, historical wooden buildings such as samurai residences and merchant houses can still be seen throughout Japan. These structures not only convey the enduring appeal of wood but have also become important cultural heritage sites that contribute to the identity of their regions today.

Sugi is another highly durable species known for its ability to absorb harmful substances and regulate temperature and humidity effectively. Its softness makes it highly workable, which is why it is often chosen for use in construction, furniture, and even tableware.

For example, bentwood boxes, known as magewappa, are crafted by bending fresh wooden planks into curved forms. Sugi’s pliability makes it ideal for this type of craftsmanship. When used as a storage container, the wood helps maintain the optimal humidity, preserving the freshness and flavor of the food inside.

When it comes to serving dishes, the natural beauty of wood—the color, grain, and texture—plays an important role. Wooden tableware, crafted to highlight the unique texture and subtle grain patterns of each species, is irreplaceable in the world of Japanese cuisine.

Furthermore, wood is a natural insulator, meaning that it keeps heat from transferring to the container, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits.

The diverse characteristics of each tree species make wood suitable for a wide range of uses, allowing artisans and manufacturers to select the perfect type for each purpose. This variety is one of wood’s greatest appeals and a key reason why it continues to be widely utilized.

Innovations in wood processing: enhancing durability

Recent advancements in construction and processing technologies have further increased the value of wood as a material.

One such technology is S-Tech treatment (nitrogen heat treatment), which decomposes the components in wood that lead to rot, improving its resistance to decay and insects. Remarkably, boardwalks constructed using S-Tech wood have endured for over 20 years, demonstrating its incredible durability.

In addition to enhancing longevity, S-Tech treatment has another key advantage. By using temperatures above 200°C (392°F) to treat wood without relying on chemicals, this process prevents the release of harmful substances, thereby reducing environmental impact.

Another promising technology is preservative and termite-proof plywood for structural use, which is anticipated to see growing global adoption in the coming years.

In wooden buildings, which are so extensively used in Japan, there is a growing demand for materials that minimize environmental impact while offering long-term durability. Preservative and termite-proof plywood for structural use is made by infusing preservatives deep into the layers of plywood, which helps prevent material degradation and protects the value of the structure over time.

This technology proves especially effective when used in areas that are difficult to maintain, such as exterior walls, subflooring, and areas exposed to moisture.

Since these materials are intended to last across generations, durability is essential. These innovations, which emphasize both sustainability and longevity, help prevent unnecessary deforestation and contribute to environmental conservation.

As the world increasingly focuses on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these advancements in wood processing are drawing significant attention.

Japanese Hinoki: recognized around the world

Until recently, Japanese timber was primarily used domestically, but in recent years, its potential for use overseas has started to gain significant attention.

This shift was prompted by the introduction of Hinoki in the “two-by-four construction method,” which originated in North America.

In this construction method, wood is known as “two-by-four dimension lumber” and is widely employed in wooden structures.

In April 2024, the structural integrity of Hinoki-based two-by-four dimension lumber was certified by the American Lumber Standards Committee. This recognition now allows this wood to be utilized as a building material in the United States, in addition to Japan.

In terms of domestic timber production, Hinoki ranks second after Sugi. As demand for high-quality timber continues to grow internationally, the future looks bright for this Japanese wood to gain a greater foothold in global markets.

While this sea of clouds only appears under certain conditions, the occurrence rate at SORA terrace in 2022 was 65.9%! Interestingly, it occurs more frequently in the evenings than in the early mornings.

The café’s menu features a wide range of dishes made from carefully selected ingredients, and an abundance of sweets made using locally grown fruits!

The menu even includes dishes inspired by the sea of clouds, which are so adorable you can’t help but take a photo!

In addition, they operate a glamping facility at the foot of the mountain.

The air is pure, so on clear nights, you can see a sky full of stars.

Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort

白馬八方尾根スキー場 Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort (pronounced “happoh-oh-neh”) is located in 白馬村 Hakuba Village, Northwestern Nagano Prefecture, a place often referred to as a winter sports mecca.

At this resort, you can easily enjoy trekking.

Take the gondola and lift to about 1,800 m (5,906 ft) above sea level, walk for about an hour, and you will arrive at a popular scenic spot, 八方池 “Happō Pond.”

On clear days, they say you can see the reflection of the three peaks of the Hakuba mountain range in the crystal-clear water.

Thanks to a beginner-friendly trail, even those new to mountain climbing can visit with ease.

As the timberline in this area is low, there is nothing to obstruct your view, allowing you to take a leisurely walk and enjoy the beautiful flowers and views at your own pace.

After a pleasant mountain hike, nothing beats the taste of a picnic lunch by the pond as you bask in the satisfying weariness of a good workout!

Furthermore, for those who don’t feel like trekking, there’s “HAKUBA MOUNTAIN BEACH,” a café with a beach resort-like location.

In addition to fresh drinks and food inspired by the beach, you can enjoy a sauna, a recent trend in Japan.

Tsugaike Mountain Resort

Also located in the Hakuba area, つがいけマウンテンリゾート Tsugaike Mountain Resort turns into the largest outdoor park in the area during the summer.

In addition to camping and glamping on the slopes, and dog runs for those with canine companions, one of the most popular attractions is the innovative adventure facility called “WOW!”

“WOW!”, as the name suggests, is packed with thrilling activities. These include “Cogidas,” where you can take a leisurely bike ride in the air, and “Tobidas,” where you can slide down from a height of 12 m (39 ft) on a rubber tube and then jump into the air.

What’s more, the resort offers an assortment of activities for children to adults, such as mountain biking, zip-lining, and bouldering. This makes it an ideal destination for families or groups with varying interests.

Since you’re high up in the mountains, you can enjoy a comfortable environment even in the middle of summer.

Whether visiting with family or friends, it’s guaranteed to be a blast!

What’s more, if you take a gondola and ropeway ride further up from “WOW!”, you’ll find one of Japan’s foremost high-altitude wetlands, where you can observe a variety of flora and fauna.

There are various programs to experience the nature park, and on clear days, you can enjoy the great outdoors at an altitude of 1,900 m (6,234 ft), with alpine views featuring the three peaks of the Hakuba mountain range.

In the last 7 years, Numazu has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with LoveLive! Sunshine!!, resulting not only in an influx in tourists but even new residents who have chosen to make Numazu their home. The anime has galvanized the city, encouraging active participation of local residents, businesses, and institutions who have turned it into an opportunity to promote Numazu’s charms and create a positive energy cycle, making the city one of Japan’s most successful “anime pilgrimage” sites.

The city has embraced this influx of tourists and has made efforts to cater to them, including creating maps and brochures that highlight the locations featured in the series and offering themed tours. Regular events are held in the city to celebrate the series. Moreover, numerous local restaurants, cafes and shops have also been participating, not only selling merchandise but also providing services to please fans, known as “LoveLivers.” For example, as some of our more faithful readers may recall, we visited back in 2017 and rented an official anime car. In some cases, businesses have even become new “pilgrimage spots” in their own right, playing an active role in the evolving fandom.

Voices from Numazu

Through two visits, one in 2020 and again in 2022, we interviewed several sources in Numazu to understand how this particularly successful synergy has evolved.

Numazu city councilman Ryū Ozawa

Our first interviewee was 小澤隆 Ryū Ozawa, a councilman for Numazu City, who also happens to be a fan of the series.

Although Mr. Ozawa acknowledges that there were initially some reports of visitors talking to students from Nagaisaki Elementary and Jr. High School, the inspiration for the Uranohoshi Girls’ Academy in the anime, as well as an incident in which someone defaced the anime-themed manholes installed throughout the city, these were only minor hiccups. Overall, most fans have been eager to enjoy the city and the anime sites, and far from causing trouble, they are happy to support local residents.

The impact of the anime on the city has been overwhelmingly positive, Ozawa explains. Local businesses have welcomed anime fans, and many have reported an increase in revenue as a result. Ozawa also notes that the anime has brought the community together in unexpected ways, such as an 80-year-old woman who started watching the series because it was set in her area. The mayor of Numazu, who was 52 years old when the anime came out, has also been an active supporter of the series, wishing the voice actors and characters a happy birthday on social media and even attending concerts in Tokyo Dome and Saitama as a guest of honor.

Even though several years have passed since the initial airing of the series, the relationship between LoveLive! Sunshine!! and Numazu continues to thrive. Due to restricted travel during the novel coronavirus pandemic, there were periods of time when fans couldn’t visit. Nevertheless, Ozawa notes that the pandemic has not had a significant effect on the fanbase’s enthusiasm. In fact, online expressions of desire to visit the city only increased.

In addition to visiting places featured in the anime, LoveLivers have a wide range of experiences to choose from when it comes to interacting with local businesses. Ozawa mentions four types of shops that fans like to frequent: those that are actually featured in the anime or game, those that collaborate with the official merchandise and sell items like stamps and badges, those that display large panels and attract customers to their store, and those that just show support for LoveLive! Sunshine!! but don’t actively sell merchandise.

Tomomi Mine, Tsuji Photo Studio

One example of a local Numazu business that has played an active role in nurturing the bonds between Numazu and the anime’s fans is the つじ写真館 Tsuji Photo Studio. Although it wasn’t initially featured as a location in the anime, this photo studio’s role in providing a welcoming space and the enthusiastic efforts of its most vocal representative, 峯知美 Tomomi Mine, has helped to make it famous among fans.

Once she realized that the anime was set in Numazu and featured many of its locations, landmarks and businesses, Mine wanted to do something to help, so she started posting information about local events as well as a map of locations featured in the anime on a blackboard outside the store. Fans started coming to see the blackboard and they themselves started contributing by drawing pictures for the individual Aqours members’ birthdays and other events related to the anime. After attending the first concert by the voice actresses held in Numazu, Mine was inspired to start drawing pictures of the nine members of the group to show her support. Later, her daughter took over because she was more skilled at drawing.

In addition to the blackboard, Tsuji Photo Studio keeps a collection of albums filled with photos taken by fans. According to Mine, “the albums serve as a bridge between the past and the future, allowing people to look back on their memories of their visit and connect with others who have also visited Numazu.” Moreover, when visitors ask where certain photos were taken, she explains that it serves as an opportunity for her and other fans to communicate.

Recognizing Tsuji Photo Studio’s important role, the anime producers gave it a spot in the opening sequence of the 2019 film Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie Over The Rainbow.

Mr. Kiminobu Segawa, Shougetsu

Another example of a local Numazu business important for the anime’s fandom is the confectionery and cafe 松月 Shougetsu in the 内浦 Uchiura area where most of the anime is set. Featured in episodes 6 and 12 of Season 1, as well as in the abovementioned opening sequence of the 2019 film, Shougetsu has become a popular destination for fans.

According to shop owner 瀬川公伸 Kiminobu Segawa, the anime brought them many new customers and an increase in business. In an effort to please fans, Shougetsu not only began making limited-edition sweets inspired by the members of Aqours to commemorate their birthdays but also began displaying goods brought in by LoveLivers. Due to the pandemic, the number of customers and sales decreased, but fans of the anime were still coming.

The store also sees a significant influx of visitors during the times of concerts and other major events related to the series. “Of course, the live events themselves are held in larger cities like Tokyo and Yokohama, but we see a lot of fans coming here to Numazu before and after the events,” said Segawa. “We even have fans coming from as far as Northeastern Japan and overseas. They come here as part of their pilgrimage to the anime’s ‘holy places’.”

Speaking of holy places, some fans may have wondered about possible biblical references in the anime. Not only does one member, third-year student Kanan Matsuura, have a name that is homophonous with Canaan, the “promised land” of the Old Testament, but first-year student Yoshiko Tsushima has adopted the name of John the Apostle, ヨハネ Yohane in Japanese, which also happens to be the name of a church in Numazu.

Although numerous Japanese cities have churches with that name, fans from out of town who have ventured beyond the common anime pilgrimage route have surely been happily surprised to discover the Numazu St. John’s Anglican Church (沼津聖ヨハネ教会 numazu sei yohane kyōkai) during their wanderings.

Could there actually be a connection to the anime? We spoke to resident priest パウロ窪田真人 Father Paul Masato Kubota, who kindly agreed to be interviewed.

Father Kubota took up residence at the church in 2018 just when LoveLive! Sunshine!! was at the height of its popularity. Although he avoids talking about the anime when interacting with senior members (aged 65 and up) who make up the majority of the congregation, he has tried to use it as a tool to connect with young members of his congregation and as a way to teach them about religion. According to Father Kubota, “members of the congregation, particularly children, have connected to the anime, so doing this makes them more interested in Sunday school and other religious activities.”

For example, in his monthly comments in the newsletter for the Shion Kindergarten adjacent to the church, instead of diving straight into a religious topic, he has, on more than one occasion, used an analogy from the anime and the story of the members of Aqours.

As for Yohane being referred to as a “fallen angel,” he doesn’t have any negative feelings about it. “If it helps bring more interest to the church, it’s a positive thing,” he says. Perhaps even more fans will stop by* once Yohane of the Parhelion: Sunshine in the Mirror airs later this year.

When they do, Father Kubota hopes to connect with any fans, especially if they’re Christians, and extend a warm welcome to his church.

These are only some of the numerous voices we heard during our visits to this lovely sunshine-filled city on the coast. Through their efforts and genuine interest in the anime as a positive force for Numazu, city government representatives, businesses, and establishments alike are maintaining the positive energy that continues to bring fans and establish Numazu as a shining example as one of Japan’s most successful anime pilgrimage sites.

This can be found in a frozen section, and not in the actual dessert section.

Depending on the location and area, people say it can actually be quite hard to find. Needless to say, we felt our heart skip in excitement when we luckily found one nearby!

The picture on the label looks rather like a cake. We were doubtful that the toppings of the pancake cake would look as pretty as the picture, but we got ready to cook it up.

For this dessert, you’ll need a microwave to prepare it, simply follow the instructions on the back and adjust the cooking time accordingly.

It was a nice surprise to see that the topping decoration looked just like it did on the package picture!

The toppings consisted of milk cream, chocolate chunks, almond bits, and cocoa powder. It already looked delicious, almost like an ice cream cake.

When you look at it from the side, you can see the pretty layers of two pancakes and the cream.

The picture doesn’t do justice to the thickness of the pancake and cream.

We knew this dessert had quite a visual from the package picture, but the impression of the real one was bigger than we imagined it would be.

One thing to remember in the preparation process is to take off the paper cup from the bottom before placing it in the microwave.

The side film stays at this point.

Although it was frozen, we couldn’t help but worry if it was really okay to cook whipped cream in a microwave, but here goes nothing. Wecooked it for 2 minutes in 500W as instructed.
While it was getting cooked, there were no visible changes other than the frost on the side melting.

The 2 minutes passed quickly with much anticipation. We took it out of the microwave to check on the finished product.

It’s hard to see from this photo, but there was steam coming out from the top.

We gently touched the side and bottom to check, and it was warmer than expected.

The surface of the chocolate chunks was slightly melted, and we could smell a sweet fragrance in the steam.

Every microwave cooks differently, so it is recommended to keep an eye on it every 10 seconds or so to avoid overcooking.

Now it is finally time to take the side film off from the dessert.

It is the most important part of the preparation process, so we were a little worried that it may collapse, or something else may go wrong.

We carefully pulled the film up to peel it off. Perhaps, it was the sliminess of the cream, but it came off ever so smoothly without an incident.

Once the side film was off, a delicious looking, restaurant grade pancake appeared in front of us!

Just like the package described, the topping was so creamy it was falling off the side.

The visual was also as good as the package.

Once we cut in half, we could see the beautiful layers of cream and pancakes.

It was then that we noticed that there was also custard cream sandwiched in between the pancakes!

We took a big bite into the rich and thick serving.

As we took a mouth full of chocolatey pancake happiness , the vanilla flavor quickly spread in our mouth.

The pancake was as fluffy as expected, but also had some gooey texture to it. It melted in the mouth quickly, reminding us of sponge cake or Castella.

Even the surprise custard cream inside gave it a unique accent to the pancake texture which at times tends to be monotonous.

We were worried that the whipped cream may get too warm. Surprisingly, despite the warm pancake itself, the whipped cream stayed cool!

We think it could depend on the heat adjustment in the microwave, but were pleasantly surprised that there were thoughts into even the smallest details in the making of this dessert.

Once enough time passes, the pancake soaked up the melted whipped cream, resulting in more of a juicy texture.

It had volume, and was sweet enough but also enjoyable until the last bite.

It felt like such a luxury experience being able to have a quality pancake from a convenience store frozen sweets section.

Although it isn’t as instant as other convenience store desserts, and you have to warm it up in a microwave, perhaps that’s what makes it a little more special and enjoyable.

7-Eleven’s “Pancakes with Cream & Chocolate Chunks” contains about 575 kcal, and is priced at 494 yen including tax.

Many ramen lovers and foodies in the Tokyo area are undoubtedly anticipating the grand reopening of renowned ramen shop Japanese Soba Noodles Tstuta on February 10th, 2023 in the Yoyogi-Uehara neighborhood of Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward.

The options are abundant, and what’s appealing about MUJI’s food section is that almost at every visit, you can find something new.

The other day, we found a new risotto series called “Made-in-Italy”, which apparently has all the ingredients in the package, and only needs to be simmered in a pot to cook.

We picked up two of MUJI’s ready-to-eat risotto packages to see how they fared in a taste test.

The two we chose from their lineup were “Cheese Cream” and “Porcini”.

First, place all the package contents in a small pot.

We were surprised to see that there was actual Italian uncooked rice in the package, quickly heightening our anticipation for possibly high quality risotto.

Once the water of suggested amount is added to the pot, stir and put the heat on high until boiling.

Once it starts to boil, turn the heat down to medium, and continue to simmer until it becomes creamy. Make sure to stir frequently so the rice doesn’t stick on the bottom.

Do not cover to let liquid evaporate completely.

The finished aesthetic was so appetizing that it made me want to get a better dish to serve properly for next time! We settled for sprinkling it with black pepper after plating.

Giving it a taste test, the Cheese Cream flavor was as expected; a very rich cheese flavor. While we initially only added the black pepper for the sake of the picture, it complimented the risotto and brought out the cheesy flavor even more.

The Porcini risotto had a subtler flavor compared to its cheesy counterpart. However, the strong mushroom flavor made it all the more refreshing.

The packages are so easy and simple to make, but since you have to cook the rice, you’ll want about 30 minutes to work with.

Each Risotto from MUJI’s “Made-in-Italy Risotto” series is 290 yen (tax included), making it an unexpected bargain for its high quality!

It’s called Cup Noodle Gyoza BIG.

The name itself is appetizing in itself, so we decided to pick on up to see how the classic ramen restaurant combo tasted in Cup Noodle form!

The Cup Noodle even came with a packet of gyoza dipping sauce, which is a mixture of soy sauce, sesame chili oil, and vinegar.

The sauce gets added last, so we poured in some hot water and waited for it to cook for the usual 3 minutes.

Above is what it looked like after the 3 minutes of cooking passed.

You can actually see the typical Ggyoza ingredients such as chives and cabbage and of course, as well as Cup Noodle’s famous “mystery meat” (which as it turns out, is no longer a mystery).

Lastly, we topped it off with the gyoza sauce, and our gyoza and ramen combo was ready.

When we took a sip of the soup, the flavor of spicy sesame oil from the gyoza sauce quickly spread through our mouth and gave delicious but not overpowering punch from the get go.

As warned on package, this is indeed a Cup Noodle flavor that will make you crave a bowl of rice.

The combination of classic dumpling fillings and sauce gives this Cup Noodle much more of a gyoza-like flavor than a ramen one.. The chives in particular were quite tasty.

Even though we were slurping ramen, it somehow gave us the illusion that we were eating gyoza!

Signature Products

Shorakuen’s signature product line is 山菓子 “Yamagashi,” a palm-sized chocolate confectionery that depicts the ridgelines of some of Japan’s most beautiful mountains such as Mt. Sakurajima, Mt. Rishiri, Mt. Yufudake, and Mt. Omuro. They take on the appearance of a diorama when presented in their “miniature garden” boxes.

The molds for these confections are made based on actual topographical data, and when cut in half, the layers of ganache, sponge, fruits, and nuts resemble geological formations. Each mountain is accompanied by carefully selected local specialties to express the flavors and seasons associated with that mountain.

The store also offers 雛山 “Hinayama,” which are smaller versions of Yamagashi. Their design is inspired by Japanese hina ningyo doll displays. These unique sweets have previously only been available in pop-up shops, but will now be available in the store permanently.

New Mt. Fuji Yamagashi

To commemorate the grand opening of the store, KLOKA is launching a new version of their Yamagashi based on Mt. Fuji. This new release will be larger in size than before and will be presented in a specially designed box to celebrate the new store’s opening.

Okoshi Tins

Shorakuen also offers “Okoshi,” a sweet and salty crunchy rice crisp treat with an addictive taste. These treats are carefully crafted piece by piece in Shorakuen’s kitchen and include flavors such as yuzu pepper, plum, cinnamon, and green tea. They are available for take-out only and are sold in a 110g tin.

Tea Salon

The store also features a small tea salon where visitors can enjoy a variety of unique drinks. Offerings include special Taiwanese tea, two types of original hot chocolate, and chai with many Japanese spices. In addition to these, a variety of drinks such as coffee and whiskey are also available to pair with the Yamagashi.

Interior Design

The interior of the Shorakuen Tea Salon & Boutique is inspired by the image of a “souvenir shop in a fairyland,” with a blend of Japanese and Western motifs scattered with European ornaments, creating a somewhat exotic atmosphere, like something out of an old fairy tale. The tableware looks as if it were a gift that arrived in Japan from the Silk Road to the Far East, and the store dares to use a mix of eras, countries and cultures. Visitors may even catch a glimpse of Shorakuen’s karakuri mechanical doll appearing from time to time to entertain them. The tea salon, located next to the store, offers an additional 9 seats for visitors to enjoy the sweets and drinks in a luxurious setting that resembles a heavenly hideaway.

Daisendori Chicken Yakitori are skewers of Daisen Chicken, known for its tender and juicy meat. The robot’s movements are triggered by sensors, making it even more realistic. This robotic Yayoi Kusama truly dips into the uncanny valley.

The new Pistachio Mocha uses both pistachio sauce and pistachio flakes for a rich and layered drink, and is available with whipped cream topping for no extra charge. It can be ordered (638 yen for regular size, 748 for a large) in both hot and cold varieties.

HATTO COFFEE will also be offering a new steam cocoa (440 for regular size, 528 for large), also available as a hot or cold beverage.

Vegan chicken and waffles (「ヴィーガンワッフルチキン」) – priced at 1,848 JPY.

This vegan take on the classic American soul food, chicken and waffles, features mochi (unsweetened glutinous rice cake) instead of chicken, deep-fried in a batter made from gluten-free flour. It comes with homemade tartar sauce, vegan cheddar cheese sauce, and maple mustard, creating a sweet and savory taste that’s hard to resist.

Duck ragu with organic balsamic and porcini-infused tagliatelle (「鴨のラグー 有機バルサミコとポルチーニの香り タリアテッレ」) – priced at 2,178 JPY.

This is a hearty pasta dish that features duck and seasonal vegetables cooked slowly in organic balsamic and red wine, creating a rich and deep flavor. The dish is served with homemade tagliatelle infused with a hint of porcini aroma. It pairs well with a glass of wine.

Vegan strawberry shortcake parfait (「ヴィーガンストロベリーショートケーキパフェ」) – priced at 2,288 JPY.

Kaman will be working with food truck operator Workstore Tokyo Do and delivery service Wolt Japan to test the use of multi-use packaging for takeout and delivery from 19 restaurants and 5 food trucks in the Shibuya area from January 24th to February 23rd, 2023.

If you’re currently staying or planning your trip to Japan with accommodations in walking distance of Shibuya Station and you care about the environment, you may be interested in knowing which establishments and food trucks are participating and where you can return the Megloo containers once you have completed your meal. The Megloo cycle (clockwise from top left): Customers who order from participating eateries receive their food in Megloo multi-use packaging. The 3rd Sakana & Japan Festival was held in 2019 but the ones in 2020, 2021, and 2022 were canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Now, to the delight of seafood lovers in the Tokyo area, after a four-year hiatus, the annual festival has finally returned!

The festival will feature around 70 booths offering a variety of fish and seafood dishes from all over Japan, including tuna, salmon, ikura (salmon roe), sea urchin, and crab. Visitors will have the opportunity to taste fresh seafood bowls, local specialties, fisherman’s meals, seafood ramen, and seafood paella.

Details are still to be announced, but according to the press release, some of the must-try food items at the festival will include things like:

The theme for the contest was to write “a story where you bump into a girl on a street corner like the romantic comedy cliche, but don’t forget the bread the girl is holding in her mouth”. What a fun theme! They made two types of pastries based on scenes in the stories.

Unrequited Love Danish

The first pastry is called “Unrequited Love Danish” (kataomoi denisshu | 片想いデニッシュ)! How adorable! This pastry appeared in “You, the girl I met on an unusual morning” (mishiranu asa to kimi | 見知らぬ朝と君) by Shizuku Kisaragi 如月雫. The story is about a boy who meets a girl he doesn’t know although she was wearing a uniform from the same school. This story won the main prize. The cute heart-shaped danish is filled with whipped cream and strawberry jam. The red bits on top are raspberry chips. The price is 270 JPY, tax included.

Coconut and Cheese with Pineapple and Bacon

This is the next pastry. It looks very tasty! The story that came in second place, “Her favorite,” (kanojo no okiniiri | 彼女のお気に入り) by Yū Miyamai 宮舞夕, serves as its inspiration. Pineapple, caramelized coconuts, cheese, and bacon. The combination of sweet and savory ingredients sounds so unique, but it’s actually key to the story! The price is 280 JPY, tax included.

If you’re traveling through Tokyo with an appetite, there’s no better place to experience that cooking phenomenon then one restaurant famous for their chef who is known as “the god of fried rice.”

Takumi Murakami of the Shibuya location of Kani chahan no mise (Crab Fried Rice Restaurant) may have set a new standard for impressively fast cooking and plaiting skills.

In a video shared to the YouTube channel of TV Tokyo program “Uchimura no tsuboru douga”, Murakami shows off how he is able to smoothly and quickly prepare the store’s signature crab fried rice, winning over many on the internet with comments such as “This is the work of a god” and “His technique is beyond compare.”

Murakami is clearly working as quickly as possible to cook up a batch of fried rice and plate it within 50 seconds, but not once does he ever seem flustered and demonstrates splendid handling of the wok.

Those hoping to try the crab fried rice may want to check out the store in Shibuya–although they likely won’t have to wait that long to get their order!

A new “burger bistro” in Shibuya, a lively neighborhood famous for its energetic street atmosphere and trendy fashion, Chillmatic has gained an excellent reputation for its carefully crafted burgers and particularly for its outstanding homemade pastrami. The restaurant was established through the collaboration of 米澤文雄 Fumio Yonezawa, a Michelin-rated chef with experience in both New York and Tokyo, and renowned chef 塩田大治 Daiji Shioda, who livens up Chillmatic with his expertise in French cuisine and his outgoing personality, accented by an impressively bushy beard.

The Concept

The concept behind Chillmatic is to provide a “chill” atmosphere with the best in food, drinks, service, and space, with a focus on street culture. The name “Chillmatic” is a play on the words “chill” and “illmatic” – meaning the best and most enjoyable. The space is designed with a street culture aesthetic, fitting in well with the MUSTARD™ HOTEL Shibuya, where the bistro is located, which also has a focus on street culture and events.

The Menu

Chillmatic offers a variety of delicious and unique burger options, with the signature dish being the 90-day aged beef and homemade pastrami burger.

The pastrami is prepared by marinating beef brisket for four days in salt and then heating it until tender, and then smoking it for an additional six days before it is served. The pastrami is thick and has a crispy texture which compliments the juicy patty made with coarsely hashed 90-day-aged premium beef with a subtly sweet and nutty flavor. This amazing burger sets you back 1,800 JPY.

Sometimes you need to really strap yourself down and concentrate for heavier workloads, however. Fortunately, a new “Super Concentration” remote work and self-study space is opening at a convenient location in Tokyo to handle those needs for travelers and residents alike–Coin Space.

The new Coin Space is opening on January 20th right in front of Seiseki Sakuragaoka Station, a major station on the Keio Line with a large number of commuters to and from Tokyo. The facility is meant to address the needs of remote work and online classes becoming more and more common in Japan, but also looks to be a very useful hub for travelers who need to settle into their work on the go as well.

The new 48-seat facility offers power outlets at each seat, as well as Wi-Fi. Private box seats for online meetings and 4-person seats for conferences are also available. Using the facility is easy too; simply scan the QR code placed at each seat to start using the facility immediately without the need for any membership registration that you might find at a net café.

Reasonable rates start at 200 yen per 30 minutes (maximum 1,200 yen per day), and customers are welcome to bring in their own food and drink as well.

The new Coin Space Seiseki Sakuragaoka Opa is located right nearby Sakuragaoka Station in Tokyo (access details available below), and further information about it and the 40 total locations throughout the country can be found at Coin Space’s homepage.

On its rooftop, “SHIBUYA SKY” offers a 360-degree view of Shibuya from 229 meters above the city. Not only does it offer an excellent birds-eye view of the famous Shibuya scramble crossing but it also affords breathtaking views of the entire city. Naturally, it’s a popular tourist spot.

While taking normal pictures of the cityscape is more than enough reason to visit, you can also follow the example of Japanese Twitter user and photography buff 紗未 Sami (@szuuxlo) and take some more artistic photos if you intentionally incorporate the protective glass which reflects the image of the visitors. The key is to know what time of day to do it.

You have direct access to the Shibuya Scramble Square building from Shibuya Station.

• JR Line: From the JR Central or JR South ticket gates, proceed in the direction of the East Exit.

Tentatively called BafunYasai TCC CAFÉ, the new concept cafe operated by TCC Japan will provide a unique experience not only involving delicious food but also concern for horse welfare and sustainable living.

Based in the horse-famous city of Ritto, Shiga Prefecture, where the JRA Japan Racing Association’s training center is located, TCC Japan engages in social activities such as support for retired racehorses and horse therapy for children with disabilities.

According to the Shibuya Keizai Shimbun, in 2020, the company decided to set up a new activity base in the Kanto area where the number of fans of retired racehorses and affiliated riding facilities is higher than in Ritto. They hope that opening a cafe will provide a new gathering place where the public can become more aware of its activities as well as the social issues involving horses.

Located in a quiet alley off the busy Omotesando avenue, BafunYasai TCC CAFÉ will offer visitors a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The café’s location was chosen for its accessibility and high visibility.

The restaurant will offer a menu featuring 馬糞野菜 bafun yasai (lit. “horse manure vegetables”), vegetables and fruits grown from horse manure fertilizer, carefully selected by visiting farmers directly. The restaurant is considering offering plates with a choice of main dishes for lunch, and vegetarian snacks and side dishes to pair with drinks in the evening. Drinks, such as craft ginger ale, will also use herbs and fruits grown from horse manure fertilizer.

There’s also an idea for a latte decorated with horse motif artwork.

The café’s open-air terrace, made of wood chips, will have a herb garden grown using horse manure fertilizer. The café’s interior walls and floor will be designed with natural materials such as wood and will use an earth color palette to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that evokes the feeling of being in a horse stable. The café will have 68 square meters of indoor space and 18 square meters of terrace space, with seating for 35 people. There will also be a retail corner where they’ll be selling food products made with horse manure-grown vegetables as well as original TCC Japan goods.

If you’re traveling on the Tokyo Metro, get off at the Meiji-jingumae ‘Harajuku’ Station. Here’s how to get to Junkissa Panessu from the station.

Meiji-jingumae ‘Harajuku’ Sta. Exit 7

This station is on Meiji-dori (明治通り) avenue. When you reach the top of the stairs, you’ll see the popular ramen chain Ichiran Ramen on the other side of the street.

You’ll also see the Anchor used clothing store and a Vans store.

Keep walking on Meiji Dori avenue in the direction of Shibuya, on the same side as the station, passing Pop Mart along the way.

Junkissa Panesu in the Miyazaki Bldg., easily recognizable from the huge JAM sign for the JAM used clothing store and Teddy’s Burgers on the second floor. Beyond the Miyazaki Bldg. is the Q Plaza building.

To access the cafe, enter the building on the first floor and go through the open corridor leading into the interior alcove. Junkissa Panesu will be on the right at the end of the corridor.

Strawberry sandwiches using Ichigosan strawberries

For six weeks from February 1st to March 15th, 2023, customers at Junkissa Panesu will be able to order a special fruit sandwich featuring succulent and fragrant Ichigosan strawberries from Saga Prefecture. The Age-tilla (a combination of “ageru,” the Japanese word for “fry” and “tortilla”) is shaped like a giant spring roll, and meant to be enjoyed as a one-handed crispy street snack complemented by the texture of mashed potatoes, and comes in three different flavors.

Potato pizza with whole sausage

A pizza-flavored Age-tilla stuffed with a whole sausage and tomato sauce-infused mashed potatoes, then topped with parsley, cheese sauce, and “god spice.”

Melted cheese

An Age-tilla stuffed with Genovese mashed potatoes and gooey shredded cheese, sour cream and onion sauce, then topped with black pepper and cheese sauce.

Dessert chocolate

A sweets take on the Age-tilla, filled with hite chocolate “mash” infused with bitter chocolate, then drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with crushed almonds.

All wraps are priced at 500 yen, and according to the store’s lore, are brought to you by the Potato God, who descended from the ancient potato kingdom to spread the deliciousness of potatoes in Shibuya.

Created by Rumiko Takahashi, Urusei Yatsura ran as a manga from 1978 to 1987 in Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine. The anime adaptation of the series aired in 1981 and was an instant hit, captivating audiences with its unique story and lovable characters. As fans surely know, 36 years later in 2022, the series made a comeback in the form of a new anime adaptation. To celebrate, Fuji Television and ERT decided to collaborate on a themed cafe to honor the show.

As for drinks, customers can try ラムのトラ柄ソーダ Lum’s tiger print soda” (900 JPY), a tropical lemon and passion fruit soda with grass jelly inspired by Lum’s signature outfit.

If you fancy soda floats, try one of the カラーフロート（パープル/イエロー/グリーン）”Color Floats”

Do you recognize these distinctive poses? Yes, they’re from a well-known manga/anime called Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. For those who don’t know, “Jojo” is a series that started way back in 1986 and has been serialized into over 100 volumes. It has been adapted into anime and even live-action movies and continues to be very popular in Japan and elsewhere.

“Jojo” fans with a sweet tooth, rejoice!

I have good news for “Jojo” fans. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean and the popular candy shop, Papabubble, have collaborated!

Papabubble originated in Spain and became famous for their cute artisanal candies. Previous collaborations include popular anime franchises such as Evangelion. They are also particularly well-known for producing seasonal candies such as new year, Halloween, and Christmas candies.

Let’s take a look at what they have created for this collaboration!

JOJO Mix

First is JOJO MIX (JOJOミックス)! Five flavors are in this package: chocolate, peach, pineapple, raspberry, soda, and orange. The price is 797 JPY (tax included) and it weighs 40g. It also comes with an original shopping bag!

Let’s look at the candy design.

The designs are very intricate and detailed! Can you guess which design matches which flavor? According to the illustration below the photo, the butterfly on the left is chocolate flavor, the pink and red candy is peach, the purple lips are pineapple, the white one in the middle is raspberry, the drink icon is soda, and the baseball is orange!

Seems like the colors don’t match their implied flavors. Does the blue butterfly really have a chocolate flavor? I bet a lot of you are asking that question, but don’t worry! I’ve tried other Papabubble candies and they always have flavors that are hard to imagine. The gap between their appearance and their flavor is one of the unique charms of the brand.

JOJO candy pouch set

This is the “Jojo Candy Pouch Set.” It comes in a clear plastic pouch containing two 40 g packs of candy. The first pack is JOJO MIX B with strawberry-, soda-, apple-, pear-, and cherry-flavored candies. The second pack is JOLYNE MIX in the theme of protagonist Jolyne Cujoh (空条徐倫), with apple mint-, grape-, cola-, lime-, and lemon-flavored candies. However, what distinguishes HIDEAWAY from the plethora of cafes and coffee stands available in Tokyo is the fact that it also has a mission to promote understanding of mental illness in Japan.

It all began with Project Semicolon. Originating in the United States, Project Semicolon is a grassroots mental health organization that encourages people to tattoo the punctuation mark semicolon (;) as a form of solidarity between people dealing with mental illness or the death of someone from suicide. The idea is that when people with mental illness feel lonely and that others don’t understand them, seeing the semicolon tattoo on someone else can remind them that they’re not alone.

The owner of HIDEAWAY, 宇野辰将 Tatsumasa Uno, who suffered from a panic disorder, was inspired by Project Semicolon while studying abroad in the US and wondered if it could be promoted in Japan as well. After opening a coffee roastery in Kyoto in February 2020, he started a successful crowdfunding campaign and opened HIDEAWAY in Yoyogi in October 2022.

Currently, HIDEAWAY mainly uses in-store displays and Instagram to raise awareness of Project Semicolon among customers.

The coffee stand has also started a new initiative to further its mission by distributing original stickers bearing the semicolon symbol and the symbol of crossed fingers on January 5th, 2023. The stickers are meant to convey the message of “good luck” and support for those dealing with mental illness.

So, the next time you’re in the Yoyogi area, stop by HIDEAWAY to enjoy a cup of coffee and a light meal while supporting a good cause. HIDEAWAY’s mission makes it a unique and meaningful experience.

Vending machines not only sell countless different brands of beverages, both hot and cold, but there are also vending machines selling everything from pizza, curry rice, frozen ramen and even high-quality French cuisine.

With the novel coronavirus pandemic, food vending machines have diversified even further, on the one hand giving businesses an alternative way of selling products and helping them recoup some of the loss caused by a drop in in-person sales, and on the other hand, giving customers a way of enjoying food in a safe, convenient and socially distant manner.

Salad Stand

One such vending machine can be found in Shibuya, Tokyo. It’s called Salad Stand. The colorful exterior of the machine is inspired by earth, grass, sky, and sun. A peek inside reveals a colorful array of salads, just like those served in restaurants.

On January 16th, 2023, the fourth machine in Shibuya ward is being installed, and this one may be the most convenient of them all, since it’s located in the concourse outside the central gate of the Keio Inokashira Line at Shibuya Station.

Signature Salad Stand Salads

In this machine, three of seven salads will be offered on a rotating schedule.

The salads all cost 880 JPY, including tax, and include:

• A fiber-rich Beniharuka sweet potato and almond salad.
• A protein-rich salad made with Japanese-grown soybeans and shima tofu from Okinawa, also paired with anchovy dressing.
• A smoked salmon and cheese Salad, drizzled with a special anchovy dressing.
• A crab meat and oyster salad, also paired with anchovy dressing.
• A yellowfin tuna salad, drizzled with white dressing.
• A steamed chicken and quinoa salad, also paired with white dressing.
• A smoked duck and almond salad, also paired with white dressing.

Sandwiches

You can also buy sandwiches featuring a variety of fillings such as vegetables, chicken, ham and eggs. The machine offers two different options: “Mustard Chicken & Egg BOX” and “Ham Katsu & Coleslaw BOX” which change on a weekly basis. These sandwiches are priced at 350 JPY (including tax).

Baked Potato

If you want something lighter, there are snacks such as a smooth and creamy baked potato made with Beniharuka sweet potatoes that have been stored at low temperatures to increase their sweetness for 350 JPY (including tax).

Smoked Egg

Another unique option is the smoked egg, using only eggs from contracted farms in Yamagata prefecture, and seasoned only with salt. The eggs are then smoked and aged for 3 days to fully infuse the flavor. It’s priced at 150 JPY (including tax).

Cold-Pressed Juices, Drinks, and Cold Soups

In addition to salads, the vending machine also offers a variety of drinkable options. To begin with, you’ll find delicious cold-pressed juices with names like “Açaí Brown,” “Bamboo Black,” “Energy Yellow,” “Love Purple,” “Peter Orange,” and “Swiss Chard,” each priced at 1,200 JPY (including tax).

The vending machine also offers 100% pure pear juice made with high-quality domestic La France pears for a truly indulgent fruit juice experience. Priced at 250 JPY (including tax).

You can also get a yogurt drink made with 100% Hokkaido milk, mixed with grape juice and quince fruit. Priced at 250 JPY (including tax).

For those looking for a more savory choice, there are three cold soups in pouches that are compact and easy to drink. The rotating selection includes a corn potage, a carrot and citrus soup, and a gazpacho soup, each priced at 500 JPY (including tax).

Desserts

For a refreshing dessert, the vending machine offers a cup of fresh and juicy mango fruit, mildly sweetened with a light syrup. Priced at 250 JPY (including tax).

Due to its immense popularity, Mipig opened up their second cafe, this time in Tokyo’s trendy fashion neighborhood of Harajuku. The wider space allows for more free-roaming fun for the pigs and customers alike.

As with the cafe’s first branch, special care is given to the free roaming micro pigs with rules such as no flash photography or aggressive handling. A reservation system (available in English here, as well as a VIP room option) is in place so that the piggies are not overwhelmed by too many guests.

Known for their striking use of color and unique pop-inspired style with influences from retrowave, they’ve worked on the MV illustrations for NIJISANJI Vtuber 樋口楓 Kaede Higuchi and have been hired by various companies and brands for character designs, CD jackets, and card game illustrations. In December 2022, they released their first art collection, “SPECTRUM”.

The second solo exhibition of BerryVerrine’s career is called “U.V.W.” which stands for “ultra violet world.” It will feature approximately 90 pieces, primarily original illustrations, but also including acrylic and metal art, as well as specially processed canvas pieces. These diverse materials and techniques showcase BerryVerrine’s versatility and skill as an artist.

One of the highlights of the exhibition will be the opportunity to see BerryVerrine’s work in large scale, with a focus on showcasing the artist’s work in a way that highlights the unique qualities of each medium. The translucent beauty of acrylic art, for example, will contrast with the hard, metallic finish of metal art, making for a visually striking and dynamic experience.

In addition to the art itself, the exhibition will also feature limited edition merchandise, including metal and acrylic art pieces, which will allow visitors to take a piece of BerryVerrine’s stylish world home with them.

On January 21st, BerryVerrine will also be in attendance for a signing event, which will be a great opportunity for fans to meet the artist and get their artwork signed.

Japanese chain Yakiniku Like is a bit different, in that they provide one-person tables for customers who would maybe otherwise feel apprehensive about going in alone (while attitudes are changing, yakiniku is mostly looked at as a communal dining experience).

If you’re in Shibuya and have a solo yakiniku itch to scratch on the go, Yakiniku Like has another option for you! The Shibuya Utagawamachi branch recently went from “one man” to “one hand” with their Yakiniku Like Burger, which sandwiches a filling serving of their popular beef ribs between two soy sauce rice patties. To top it all off, it’s served with kimchi, a dollop of spicy gochujang mayonnaise sauce, and available in four sizes ranging from “small” to “tower”. It’s being advertised as a yakiniku bento you can eat with one hand, although the tower size seems to challenge that.

While Yakiniku Like eventually plans to expand the release, it will for now be only available for takeout and delivery from the Shibuya Utagawamachi branch. (Small) 350 yen, (Normal) 420 yen, (Large) 620 yen, (The Tower) 1,050 yen.

They have yearly releases for Halloween, Christmas, and plenty of other occasions, and if you’ve ever spent Valentine’s Day in Japan, you will know it’s one massive chocolate-gifting session. So it surely follows that any seasonal doughnuts released for Valentine’s Day will be a chocoholic’s dream, and Krispy Kreme seem set to make that dream come true in 2023.

Their Valentine’s Day lineup has been revealed, and it is more chocolatey than ever before, including six luxurious doughnuts.

Perhaps the most romantic of them all is the ‘Fondant Chocolat Heart’, which holds chocolate cream inside and is decorated with milky white chocolate and vanilla marshmallows.

The ‘Chocolate Tart’ doughnut puts some of a tart’s crispy texture into doughnut form, with a choco crunch topping and biscuit pieces hiding inside along with a smooth chocolate filling.

The ‘Nama Choco Ring’ is an extra rich take on the chocolate doughnut, which takes inspiration from a Japanese treat called ‘nama choco’. It’s similar to chocolate truffles and is a heady mix of rich chocolate and fresh cream. The chocolate version has plenty of cocoa powder and an elegant chocolate ‘baton’ as decoration.

Next up is the ‘Strawberry and Chocolate’ which features, you guessed it, strawberry and chocolate. The chocolate flavoured ring doughnut base is filled with strawberry nappage, and decorated with strawberry and blueberry for some flair.

Krispy Kreme are also releasing a ‘chocolate cake’ inspired version of their classic ‘Old Fashioned’. Instead of the usual doughnut dough, they have used a doughnut base which is closer to a cake texture, and it is topped with a chocolate coating and chocolate shavings.

Lastly, the ‘Choco & Choco Custard Heart’ has a simple and cute heart shape, and a rich custard filling made with Hokkaido-sourced milk.

These treats can be bought individually, or in variously sized sets, perfect for a romantic night in.

They will appear in Krispy Kreme branches all over Japan from 18th January 2023, and stick around until early March.

Just like families and people traveling in groups, solo travelers are often interested in experiencing tatami-matted flooring and other aspects of traditional Japanese accommodations they can’t usually experience at home. Although things are changing, for various reasons, many traditional Japanese inns still list a minimum requirement of two people per room. This means that solo travelers often end up staying in hotels and never get to experience it even though they’ve come to Japan.

Fortunately for the solo foreign traveler, there’s a new hotel that just opened in November 2022, conveniently located in the heart of the exciting Shibuya neighborhood, where you can experience tatami flooring and Japanese beds: The OneFive Tokyo Shibuya.

Accommodations

Three types of single 和室 washitsu (Japanese-style rooms) are available:

Japanese Style Single A (Tatami)

These washitsu feature Japanese futon bedding on a tatami-matted floor. Although compact, the rooms also have a shower booth for convenience, providing a pleasant Japanese-style lodging experience.

Japanese Style Single B (Bench)

This compact washitsu has a small raised tatami-matted platform with Japanese futon bedding laid on it. Just like a fold-out bed, it can also be used as a bench by removing the futon. Underneath the platform, you’ll find storage space for suitcases.

Japanese Style Single C (Wooden Floor)

Although it doesn’t have tatami mats, this room is still described as a washitsu due to the traditional Japanese parquetry flooring and the fact that you’re expected to remove your shoes at the entrance just as you would with a tatami-matted room. Storage space is also provided for long-term stays.

Although there are no Japanese-style rooms for those who aren’t traveling solo, you’ll find accommodations in the hotel’s comfortable Hollywood Twin or Double rooms (see below).

Community Lounge

The community lounge next to the front desk is an open space for guests to get together. The espresso machine with freshly ground coffee is free to use during your stay, and Wi-Fi is also available. 24 hours a day, it’s a popular place to socialize and you’ll hear many different languages spoken here.

Enjoy local events and Shibuya culture

Below the balcony is Kitaya Park, which reopened in April 2021 as Shibuya Ward’s first Park-PFI (Private Finance Initiative). Art and fashion events are frequently held. Fashionable coffee shops and mobile food stalls are also just a short walk away. It’s easy to experience Shibuya culture from this conveniently-located hotel.

Cafe the Knot

At this spacious and casual café, you can enjoy an “afternoon tea” set for lunch as it features both savory dishes and sweets arranged by the pastry chef, a side salad, and a freshly baked panini. A variety of teas to match the selection of sweets are also served. The cafe also has its own entrance which you can access from the street without going through the lobby entrance.

The Shinjidai group opened its 100th restaurant in July 2022 and is rapidly growing as it leaps forward in 2023, with the goal of reaching 500 restaurants. Following the company’s motto that “people gather at fun places,” they hope to provide an entertaining new venue in Shibuya where people will enjoy their food and good company.

Denkushi chicken skin skewers

Developed by the founder, former professional soccer player and entrepreneur Naoshi Sano, Shinjidai’s signature product, Denkushi, has become a huge hit, selling over 90 million skewers thus far!

The crispy texture of 伝串® Denkushi is achieved through a trademarked process that removes excess fat and retains healthy collagen, leaving the skins very crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Their special sweet and tangy sauce is made with ginseng, known to have many health benefits, and their seasoning mix, made with soybeans and spices, contains zero salt, you can sprinkle it on without worrying about your sodium intake.

Finally, at only 50 JPY per skewer, you can have as many as you’d like without worrying about your budget. Prices at Shinjidai are very reasonable. For example, you can have a medium sized draft beer for only 190 JPY.

SNS-famous Denkushi Pyramid

One fun menu item you can enjoy at Shinjidai is the Denkushi Pyramid, available in either 10 skewers (4 tiers), 21 skewers (6 tiers), or 36 skewers (8 tiers), stacked up to create a pyramid. Ever since the Dengushi Pyramid became an official item on the menu, it has become one of the chain’s most popular items, with diners taking photos of it all over Japan and posting them on their social media accounts.

A wide range of delicious chicken dishes

In addition to their famous Denkushi, Shinjidai has a wide variety of tasty dishes for you to try. Most items are within the 200-300 yen range, and the more substantial items below are all 480 JPY:

• 国産親鶏の炭火焼き『どる焼き』 Charcoal-grilled domestic chicken “Doruyaki”: The second-most popular item after Denkushi, it has a delicious taste, chewy texture, and smoky aroma.

LTR Corporation, a subsidiary of CL Holdings, Inc., will open the “First Doki Doki Café” in Shibuya, Tokyo, for a limited time from February 2nd to March 26th, 2023. Its concept is “a café where Asamimichan will be there for customers and provide them with hospitality.”

According to her character bio, 25-year-old office employee Asamimichan successfully passed a challenging audition process to join the character talent agency Simple Side Mascots (Simas). She aims to be Japan’s No. 1 mascot character. Asamimi-chan is a cuddly rabbit who wants to stay by your side and support you! While she loves the way you “think deeply” about things as you navigate life and all its challenges, she also hopes you’ll “think shallow” once in a while. That’s why her slogan is “Don’t Deep [sic]”

She has 4 million followers on her TikTok account, with over 200 adorable animated shorts which have been viewed more than 200 million times in total. Here’s one of them:

Asamimichan’s First Doki Doki Café

At the cafe, you’ll not only enjoy a variety of food and drink items inspired by Asamimichan, the carrot Ninjinchan, and her other friends, but you’ll also find original goods with their likenesses on them.

The menu includes an omurice dish with an image of Asamimichan sleeping peacefully on a soft bed made of eggs, a hamburger with Asamimichan on top, a classic soy-based ramen, and a healthy salad plate designed by Anemimi.
