Many people are aware that spring is one of the most beautiful and significant seasons in Japan and automatically associate the spring here with sakura (cherry blossoms) and hanami (flower viewing). However, Japan has beautiful flowers that bloom all year round and one of the most magnificent views are given by the brilliant red colors of the poppies that bloom at the end of the spring season. Unlike the sakura and ume (plum) flowers that can also be seen in more populated places and around the cities, including the capital, poppies are usually found in the countryside.

However, the rural areas are quite easy to access from the capital and the place I am going to introduce you is located in Saitama, an approximately two-hour ride from Tokyo using the train.

Bright scarlet hues at the Chichibu Kogen Bokujo

The contrast of red and blue you will discover at Chichibu Kōgen Bokujō 秩父高原牧場 in Saitama Prefecture from late May to the beginning of June will leave you speechless. The carpet of 10 million poppies creates a breathtaking scene at the Tenkū no Poppy (天空のポピー/“Sky of Poppies”) area of the farm.

The scarlet-orange flowers which welcome the arrival of summer bring so much good energy and, as symbolized by their meaning, a lot of hope for a more peaceful tomorrow. Together with the tranquil area of Chichibu, the green fields, the lively chirping of the birds, and the refreshing rural smell, Saitama is the perfect place for those who love nature and are looking to escape from the urban noises. At the Chichibu Kōgen Farm, you can also play with the farm animals and participate in various events during the year.

Important information about the Poppy Festival in 2020

Unfortunately, like many other events and places around the world, due to the pandemic and to prevent spreading the virus, the poppy festival scheduled to start from the 16th of May to June 7th was canceled this year.

The area, including parking lots, is also closed to the public to stop big crowds of people gathering and during this year, the poppies cultivation has also been stopped.
