Enoshima Aquarium is holding a special winter event entitled ‘Jewerium.’ The name is a combination of ‘jewel’ and ‘aquarium’. The organisers of the event say that they were inspired by the beauty of jewels, and their three most eye-catching elements: transparency, colour and brilliance.

Walk across the Shonan Festival Plaza, and you will come across ‘Awa no Komuro’, or the ‘Bubble Chamber.’ It’s the symbol of the Jewerium event, an outlandish creation based on the fantasy of an undersea party.

Further on, you’ll see the spectacular illuminations that run from the Enoshima Sea Candle (an observation lighthouse) to ‘Enosui’, a new venue for the light and colour festival ‘Shonan Jewels,’ which is being held on Enoshima Island.

In addition, at weekends and on public holidays for the duration of the event, a host of beautiful scenes be visible throughout the Shonan area. One such scene is a ‘countdown event’ where you can watch the illuminations being turned on from the decking on the seafront facing Enoshima island.

When viewed from the island, the decking appears to be a single beam of glorious light. The lights come on when the event opens and they go off at 8 pm.

Inside the Aquarium are tanks full of brightly coloured sea creatures, including sea urchins. Each hall of the Aquarium has been illuminated to best show off the beauty and magic of the fish and crustaceans in the water tanks.

There is also a four-metre-high seaweed tree, the ‘Tree of Light’, which has been erected in the middle of the Sagami Bay aquarium. Bubbles are released in time with the music, and beautiful coloured lights glow and flash.

In the Jellyfish Fantasy Hall exhibition, you’ll find the ‘Sparkling Room.’ Wintry images are combined with jewels and projected onto the surface of the walls by projection mapping.

One of the most spectacular of the aquaria is home to several translucent moon jellyfish. Their tank has been adorned with glittering jewels that only enhance the ethereal hue of these magical sea creatures.

The ‘Fluctuation Sea Corridor’ is a marvel of gently waving lights that illuminate the entire hall. Spend some time here watching the lights gradually change colour.

In the centre of the Jellyfish Fantasy Hall is a spherical aquarium called ‘Jellyfish Planet,’ where you can watch transparent jellyfish gently propel themselves through the water.

For the duration of the event, a special menu will be available to visitors, inspired by the Jewerium concepts of transparency, colour and brilliance.

If you’re one of the first 3300 people to post a photo taken at the event to Instagram with the hashtag #Jewerium, you will receive an original earphone cord winding mechanism as a gift.

The Jewerium event runs until March 7th, 2021. There are two scheduled events. The first runs from 10 am to 5pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays until January 31st. The second event runs according to the same schedule from February 1st until March 7th.

Enoshima Aquarium is in Fujisawa in Kanagawa prefecture. The address is 2-19-1 Katasekaigan, Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture 251-0035.
