Developed in France in the 90’s, Parkour is a fast-paced sport that focuses on navigating one’s environment in the fastest way possible using the most efficient movements across and through obstacles. A sport that puts a lot of emphasis on freestyling and interacting with the immediate environment, parkour has quickly become a hit sensation worldwide.
As a country that was once the home of roof-traversing, gravity-defying and sense-evading ninjas, it seems only fair that Japan has developed a sort of admiration for the sport; if the inclusion of skateboarding in the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympics taught us anything, it is that urban sports – such as bmxing, skateboarding and parkour – are very much a part of our world, and that Japan would like to be an acting-ambassador country to the sports.
If you’re not quite convinced about Japan’s role as a pioneer of introducing urban sports to the world, consider taking a look at the Parkour Japan National Championships which are set to return for the second time this coming Sunday with a very unique setting for the stage – the passenger department terminal at Haneda International Airport.
With recognition from the international gymnastics federation (FIG) back in 2017, it wasn’t long before Japan jumped on board and held their first national championships in Hiroshima Prefecture during November of 2019.
With COVID-19 bringing the whole world to a mighty stop in 2020, what Japan had hoped would have been the second event was postponed. But now, one year later, it’s back and what better place is there to share the sport with the world than at an international airport?
Sponsored by the Japan Gymnastics Association the event will take place on Sunday 19th December 2021 at a spectator-free area in Haneda airport.
Organizers have constructed a special obstacle course that athletes will have to navigate using their knowledge in the sport of parkour.
Whilst the actual event itself will be spectator-free, a 4K live stream of the action will be shown on BS TV TOKYO from 2:00pm – 4:10pm. A replay will be broadcasted on the 26th of December from 3:26 am – 4:56am.
