"There was a really scary mandarin orange."
A shocking photo was posted with this caption from the Twitter account belonging to ミカン専門店『のま果樹園』 (mikan senmonten noma kajuen | mandarin orange specialists Noma Orchard) (@nomakajuen), a business operated by 株式会社乃万青果 Noma Seika Co., Ltd.
The company grows mandarin oranges and sells a variety of related products.
At the company's orchard, a very odd and terrifying orange was spotted...

It looks like a monster with sharp, pointy teeth in a mouth that has been ripped open from ear to ear.
Of course, it's merely a mandarin orange. This one happens to be of the 甘平 Kanpei variety, only found in Ehime Prefecture.
According to Noma Orchard after it rains, the fruit swells rapidly as the tree absorbs water from the ground, and the outer skin, unable to hold it any longer, breaks open, resulting in this appearance.
The photo went viral, garnering over 167,000 likes at the time of writing, and eliciting comments such as:
* This is a play on words. 蜜柑 mikan (commonly written みかん or ミカン) means mandarin orange, but it's also a homophone for 未完 mikan, meaning "unfinished."
According to Noma Orchard, these Kanpei mandarin oranges are "extraordinarily delicious," and can be eaten even if they're ripped open like this.
Such tangerines wouldn't normally be sold in stores but perhaps they would be popular around Halloween due to their monstrous appearance!
