Sia’s music video for her new lead single “Alive” is as powerful as it is inspiring.
In the video, — directed by Sia and Daniel Askill — Sia’s vocals perfectly harmonize with the breathtaking display of karate kata performed by a young girl in an empty warehouse. Throughout it the girl unleashes her inner power, reminding us with the song that we can overcome any obstacle life throws at us.
But who is that mysterious girl in the video?
Her name is Mahiro Takano, a 9-year-old Japanese karate prodigy and champion of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 All Japan Boys and Girls Karate-do Tournaments. She’s also the KARATE 2020 Ambassador, a position created to promote the addition of karate as an official sport in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
So basically she’s a young karate superstar, and her talent and devotion to the martial art has won the hearts of the Japanese (and Sia, of course). But with her level of concentration, precision, speed, and intensity when performing her kata, we’re not surprised.
