Ine no Funaya is a small township that is located on the eastern end of Tango peninsula, Kyoto. Known by some as "Japan's Venice", this place historically had ties with Mainland China.

Old Japanese houses are situated right by the sea, it appears as if they are floating on the ocean. There is also an atmosphere of nostalgia in the area.

These houses are called "Funaya"; its first floor houses a boat, and living space is on the second floor. This layout is unique to this area.

There are approximately 230 Funaya houses in the area in the 5-kilometer harbor side. Because of its unique architecture, scenery and historical significance, Ine no Funaya was designated as one of the Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Japan in 2005.

Within the village, there are old-style drinking place and accommodation. And because the area is still a fishing village, there are eateries that offer fresh seafood.

Access to the area is a little inconvenient - you need to drive for around 2.5 hours from the center of Kyoto. But it's definitely worth it.
