Locals of Erode, India have recently been the spectators of a touching act of unconditional animal love.

Spotted earlier this month in the urban center of the city, a rhesus macaque monkey appeared to have rescued a puppy, protecting it from other strays and providing it the warmth of a loving guardian.

Moved by this adorable pair, the locals set out food for them so they would never be in danger of going hungry. Not only have they become a local celebrity, they’ve also taught the people around them a very important lesson.

“People who have seen them spoke of their strong mutual affection and described their bond as the most caring thing in the world — to take care of a puppy in danger and protect him like a parent,” reported Zee News. “Their undying affection gives us a valuable lesson about relationships.”

However, it may be that this seemingly destined encounter between monkey and puppy was short lived.

According to The Dodo, it appears to have been reported that forest department officials have taken custody of the puppy, although this has yet to be confirmed.

Needless to say, the most important issue is the safety and well-being of both animals. And wherever their paths might lead them to, the world will forever be grateful for their display of unbreakable bond and love.
