Exquisite as they are, kimonos as fashion wear have become obsolete — except for on special occasions, they are rarely worn by most people.
But it’s an absolute shame, considering the craftsmanship and detail that goes into making one kimono. That’s why clothing brand Morie Tokyo has taken initiative to try and bring kimonos back as stylish dresses that can be worn casually or for a special night out.

Kimonos are generally made of three components: Oshima Tsumugi, regarded as one of the three best textiles in the world; So-shibori, an elaborate tie-dyed fabric made traditionally by craftsmen; and silk gauze such as Ro and Sha, ideal materials for hot humid summers.
Kimonos are often passed down from generation to generation, and for such high-quality garments to be left inside a dark closet without ever seeing the light of day would be a waste. By having an old kimono remade, however, heirlooms can be used instead of being put away, equally treasured but appreciated in a different way.
