Kyoto-based Relier81 has made a name for itself crafting fashionable footwear from upcycled kimonos as a way of preserving the venerable tradition of kimono-making while supporting the artisans who make them.
Now, in a collaboration with UNITED TOKYO, they've created a new line of sandals using kimono sash, or obi, materials. Aptly named "OBI square sandals," the shoes are attractive and available in several varieties showing off beautiful patterns.
To create the shoes, designers from UNITED TOKYO personally selected the sash materials from Relier81's vast collection. The end result combines Relier81's upcycling know-how with the sturdy and fashionable designs of UNITED TOKYO. Two types of low-resilience materials are used for the insole to reduce the strain on the foot and provide comfortable wear without fatigue.
