Kento Yamazaki is a popular actor and model known for playing L in the Death Note TV drama series, as well as playing the lead in numerous film adaptations of manga and anime such as Your Lie in April, Hyouka, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., and Kingdom,. Fresh on the heels of his success in Kingdom and Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, the popular young actor has now been chosen to play the lead in Robert A. Heinlein's famous science-fiction novel "The Door into Summer," slated for 2021.

The Door into Summer

Originally serialized in 1956 and published in hard-cover in 1957, "The Door into Summer" is set in 1970, where we find Daniel Boone Davis, a genius engineer and inventor who made a name for himself for inventing house-cleaning robots. Betrayed by his fiancee and business partner and locked out of his company, he goes into cryosleep and wakes up 30 years later to discover that someone has been using designs he only had in his head. Featuring time travel, romance, mystery and adventure, the novel was influential in helping to popularize the time travel fiction genre, and had a significant impact on Hollywood.

And yet, the novel's first film adaptation will not be from Hollywood but from Japanese director Takahiro Miki, known for films such as Solanin and Kids on the Slope. The setting will be changed to Japan, and updated from 1970 to 1995, having the robot scientist played by Kento Yamazaki, wake up in the year 2025.

According to Fashion Press, the set will feature a charming and retro world of 1995, and special attention will be given to costuming in order to reflect the fashions of the time. The film will have SF elements all throughout, so it should be an exciting project.

Asked to comment about the upcoming film, slated for a 2021 release, Kento Yamazaki said: "I look forward to the day when we can deliver this exciting movie which will be dear (to the viewers' hearts)."
