In an announcement by the Japanese government today, November 2nd, 2020, it was revealed that manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, whose works such as Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura have become internationally famous, was awarded with the prestigious Medal with Purple Ribbon.
The medal, known as 紫綬褒章 shijuhōshō in Japanese, is awarded biannually to "individuals who have contributed to academic and artistic developments, improvements and accomplishments."
In receiving her award, Takahashi becomes the 10th manga artist to receive the medal, following in the footsteps of Osamu Akimoto in 2019, Keiko Takemiya in 2014, Katsuhiro Otomo in 2013, Moto Hagio in 2012, Ryohei Saigan in 2010, Tetsuya Chiba in 2002, Leiji Matsumoto in 2001 and Shigeru Mizuki in 1991.
Weekly Shōnen Sunday, which is currently serializing her latest work "MAO," issued the following comment by Takahashi on their official Twitter account:
"I was surprised to receive this award which is more than I deserve. With this award as an encouragement, I will continue in my efforts to deliver manga which all readers can easily enjoy. Thank you very much."
