Japanese grilled eel on rice is a dish that can polarize opinions. Some have reservations about eating the slippery snake-like fish, no matter how it is prepared. But for those who appreciate it, the eel filets, basted in a sweetened soy-based tare sauce, then caramelized over a charcoal fire as they are grilled kabayaki style, are a special treat, and one which has become more accessible and affordable thanks in part to chain restaurants such as 名代 宇奈とと Meidai Unatoto.

Meidai Unatoto already has thirteen stores in the Tokyo area, including three delivery and take-out only locations, but now they are opening or the first time in the popular tourist area and otaku hangout of Akihabara.
