For the last 22 years, McDonald's has served the Akihabara neighborhood from its Showa Dori location. Sadly, those 22 years are coming to a close in just a few hours.
However, the mood around the store's closure took an unexpected twist this morning when a sign appeared at the Burger King two buildings down. As it turns out, Burger King had a touching tribute which is melting hearts on Japanese social media today.
As posted by Twitter user Sato (@sato322) in a Tweet which already has 258,000 likes and 106,000 retweets at the time of writing, the neighboring Burger King shop had feelings of friendship and appreciation which couldn't be contained.
With his permission, we've posted Sato's images, first the McDonald's poster, then the Burger King poster beneath it, along with our translations:
"Looks like the McDonald's on Showa (Dori) is closing. Here it is, along with the comment from the Burger King two buildings over."

Thank you for much happiness over 22 years
Today is the last day for the McDonald’s two buildings down from us. It’s because they’ve been close to us, both as good rivals and friends who share the same passion for Akihabara, that we’ve been able to give our best. Thinking of a future without McDonald-san fills us with sadness. We know it’s a selfish request but please go and visit him today. As challengers who have always followed in your footsteps, we want to thank you with a smile in our hearts for all your hard work.
Thank you.
If you’d like to talk about your fun memories at McDonald’s…
Between January 31st and February 6th, if you bring a receipt from McDonald’s Showa Dori to us, we will offer you a small Burger King coffee made with 100% Arabica beans.
Moreover, if you read the initials of each line of Burger King's message, the following hidden message appears: 私たちの勝チ ("Victory is ours!").
Nicely played Burger King-san.
