Though available year round, there’s no arguing against the fact that chestnuts taste their best during the autumn season in Japan, and there’s no better tasting chestnuts across the archipelago than those produced on the fertile soil of Kumamoto’s Aso region. Situated within the Aso Caldera, these chestnuts, known as Aso waguri, are cultivated on some of Japan’s most luscious soil, and are at their prime when the summer temperatures drop and give way to autumn.
Though grown in the Aso area, Aso waguri are famed across Japan for the vibrant flavour, and come the start of the season, dishes featuring the chestnuts can be found across the country.
Most recently, dairy manufacturer Meito Kyodo Milk has announced their ‘Aso Waguri Pudding’ which is filled to the brim with smooth pudding flavoured by chestnuts grown in the Aso region.
The pudding is season-limited, and will be stocked up on combini and supermarket shelves nationwide from the 27th of September 2021.
The pudding is being manufactured as part of Meito Kyodo Milk’s ‘Local Speciality Pudding Series’, which aims to support those in the agriculture industry who are struggling due to changes in society, technology and development.
Aso Waguri Pudding is a delicious ‘bridge’ that closes the gap between consumers and about 50 Aso waguri producers. The feelings of waguri producers can be felt in each flavourful spoonful of the pudding, which uses chestnuts that have been carefully cultivated under the sun of Aso.
Putting all their focus and energy into creating an authentic dessert, Meito Kyodo Milk has managed to produce a pudding that resembles chestnuts in both texture and taste.
Made of only the very best ingredients, the waguri pudding combines the chewy texture that accompanies chestnuts and the smooth velvet of pudding into one perfect pot. The pudding is also bursting with flavour, packed with the fragrant taste of Japanese chestnuts from the Aso region.
