When it comes to regional representation via colorful characters in Japan, mascots reign supreme. Often mashups up animals and local specialties, the mascots act as local ambassadors as well as lend their adorable aesthetic charm to tourism and merchandise.
Although not quite as well known as mascots, certain regions also have what are called "local heroes". These heroes don the costumes of Tokusatsu heroes, which you may be familiar with from Kamen Rider or Power Rangers, while performing good community deeds such as picking up trash and farming, as well as coming to the rescue of young children using vending machines.
Kitakyuman (@kita_q_man), a local hero in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is one such local superhero. Recently, Kitakyuman unwittingly set up a way to use his powers for good when he became a frequent customer of a newly opened Vietnamese restaurant in his neighborhood...or so he thought.
He shared the episode on Twitter, which has quickly garnered a lot of attention and praise:
"Lately I've been going to this Vietnamese restaurant in my neighborhood a lot, but when I go they seem very busy and when I make my order they move around as if something is bothering them, and no other customers come so I've been wondering if they are OK. It turns out the restaurant hasn't even opened yet, and now somehow I'm helping translate their menu into Japanese."
As it turns out, Kitakyuman had been visiting and ordering from the restaurant as a customer even though it hadn't officially opened yet. The foreign staff, who have yet to get a stronger hold of Japanese, were unable to communicate this to Kitakyuman and simply generously accepted him as a customer!
Once finding out the truth of the situation, Kitakyuman decided to help out by putting his background of studying foreign languages in his university years to help in putting the menu into Japanese for when the restaurant properly opens.
As the restaurant seems to be on the way to opening and Kitakyuman has yet another good but everyday deed under his belt, many on Twitter were touched and amused by the story, leaving replies:
"You're both true heroes!"
"I was blown away. How is that possible? Both customer and staff are so sweet."
"What a sweet world. This was a lovely story."
"I laughed so much when I thought that the shopkeeper who was so upset at you ordering."
