Japanese design company mizuiro Inc. will soon be coming out with their fourth version (Season 4) of their much-loved “Oyasai Crayon,” or Vegetable Crayon.

Said to be on sale sometime in mid-October, the Vegetable Crayons are made from Japan-grown rice and vegetables. All containing vegetable powder, the crayons write a tad grainier than other crayons you may have used before.

And instead of naming each one by color (boring!), they’ve named them after food:

Each individual crayon is made by craftsmen in a Japanese crayon factory with over 60 years of history. In addition to the vegetable powder, they use rice wax as their main wax, utilizing only natural products that will have no harmful effects even when your child decides to take a bite.

You could say these crayons were created out of the “mottainai” mentality of the Japanese. Meaning “what a waste!” the “mottainai” mentality urges people not to waste food. That might be why mizuiro Inc. decided to use vegetable powder made from leftover foods before their expiry date, as well as parts of foods that had been cut away before shipment. So in their own incredible way, they’re striving to fight food waste. Good for them!

The company says the Vegetable Crayon was made so that kids will be able to enjoy the experience of “drawing with nature.” It sounds like a magical concept, and crayons are definitely a great way into a child’s heart!
