A quick glance at this concrete seashore in Croatia and you might not notice, but luckily all you have to do is listen to appreciate the function of the structure.

Known as "morske orgulje" in Croatian, the sea-organ was designed by architect Nikola Basic and opened to the public in 2005. At the bottom of the steps, water and wind enter through holes and are funneled into resonating chambers, and exit as aquatic organ-like music through holes at the top of the steps. Because of this, it's become a popular and scenic attraction for locals and tourists alike to share lunch and enjoy a calming ambiance.
It's a truly impressive structure, but it's not just an instrument for show. After the city of Zadar was massively damaged during World War II, it lost much of its historic landmarks and was forced to settle for uninspiring concrete structures. Nikola Basic was called upon to reinvigorate the area, and he did just that in a splendid collaboration between architectural efforts and the true beauty of organic nature. First listen to the haunting, yet wonderful music the organ produces below, and then check out some pictures of the area!
