There’s plenty of Sanrio shops in Tokyo already, but this one may be a bit harder to miss.
The tourist haven of Asakusa, patronised by domestic and overseas travelers alike, is known for its traditional atmosphere. With temples, shrines, retro shopping streets, marketplaces, the area offers a whole lot for visitors in search of authentic Japanese culture.
But this brand new addition to the area's streets may change the landscape for the cuter. A spokes-cat for kawaii culture, iconic character Hello Kitty is coming to Asakusa in the form of a brand new gift shop, called Sanrio Gift Gate.

There will be two whole floors of Sanrio goodness and the shop itself will be fronted by a giant Hello Kitty complete with eyes that can open and close. The press release doesn’t go into more detail than that, they may be constantly blinking or just every so often, we’ll have to see.
The gargantuan Kitty will be 6.8 metres tall and 5 metres wide.

Asakusa is also known for the rickshaws stationed around, with drivers offering take tourists around all the main sites of interest without having to walk around. For the grand opening there’s a planned collaboration between Hello Kitty and the ubiquitous rickshaws. The opening will also be attended by a kimono-donning Hello Kitty in another nod to Asakusa’s traditional vibes.
The grand opening is predicted to occur at the end of April 2019, so there's just over a month until until the benevolent eyes of Hello Kitty will look over Asakusa revellers.
