The currently trending Bottle Cap Challenge, which involves unscrewing a bottle cap off of the top of a bottle with a roundhouse kick (or by other means), has already been attempted by celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Justin Bieber, Jason Statham and Mariah Carey. But just like most viral trends which make it to the celebrity circuit in the West, Japan has now gotten into the craze too.
However, this being Japan, in addition to actors, entertainers, personal trainers and models, there have also been anime and game characters, VTubers and illustrated characters competing in the cap-twisting competition.
Orthodox style
Perhaps because it gives them a chance to demonstrate their kicking skills, the challenge has been popular among actors involved in the Kamen Rider series. First, Gaku Sano (the main character in last year's Kamen Rider Gaim series) tried it on July 7th, which inspired the younger Gaku Oshida (Kamen Rider Geiz in the current Kamen Rider Zi-O series) to do it as well. Both actors manage to pull it off with flair:
The Kamen Rider connection continues with former stuntman, actor and voice actor Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi, who played Shuichi Tadokoro in the Kamen Rider Kabuto series in 2006:
Of course, Kamen Rider actors aren't the only ones with athletic ability. Rina Takeda, actress, singer and black belt in Ryukyu Shōrin-ryū Karate, showed us how it's done...
...as did Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling's Miyu Yamashita.
Unorthodox style
Although the original challenge involved using a roundhouse kick, others found creative alternatives to that method.
For example, YouTube channel owner Sanchu showed it could be done with the wheel of a mini 4WD car...
...Aki Tabuchi showed it could be done with a dart (as expected from a professional dart player)...
...and cosplayer and weapon enthusiast Shishigami Modoki showed it could be done with a sword:
Anime and game characters, Vtubers and illustrations
The challenge also seems to have inspired creativity outside the world of the live action reality.
For example, in an animated sequence created by RAY based on MMD models, Mikazuki Munechika from Touken Ranbu twists off the cap like a boss, but Tsurumaru Kuninaga reaps the rewards:
Similarly using MMD models, Mochizuki created this animation featuring Gintama's Hijikata Toshizo doing the challenge with Gintoki's encouragement:
Even FBI agent Shuichi Akai from Case Closed got in on the action, and in rather flamboyant style:
Illustrator Anbe Yoshiro imagines Final Fantasy VII's Tifa Lockhart delivering a powerful kick for her challenge attempt:
Aqours leader Chika Takami from LoveLive! Sunshine!! shows she can handle the challenge, in an illustration by doujin creator Sekihiko Inui:
And while it no longer involves kicking or even a bottle, illustrator Minetaro Banban shows IDW from mobile strategy game Girls' Frontline trying the challenge in her own way:
Even Virtual Youtubers are getting in on the challenge, as we can see from Cyber Girl Siro's attempt, although there's not much evidence left in the end...
