Makoto Shinkai's latest film "Weathering with You" is off to a strong start. According to movie news site Eiga.com, the film, about a high school boy (Hodaka) who moves from his home on a remote island to Tokyo and meets a strong-willed girl (Hina) with a mysterious ability to stop the rain and clear the skies, drew 1.15 million people to theaters and earned 1.64 billion yen in its first three days, which represents a 29% increase from "your name."

Hina's Egg Fried Rice with Pea Shoots

As we've already seen with Ghibli works, when popular anime films have cooking scenes, fans are often eager to reproduce the dishes at home. Without giving away too much, "Weathering with You" has a scene in which Hina cooks a meal for Hodaka in her apartment. The meal consists of egg fried rice and a salad, both of which are made with inexpensive ingredients.

Although many of our readers have yet to see the film in their own countries, thanks to a collaboration between "Weathering with You" and cooking site kurashiru, we can already give you a "taste" of the film by showing you how to make Hina's egg fried rice recipe:

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • Rice (preferably short-grain white rice, ideally Japanese), cooked (preferably just cooked and not cold), 200 g (7 oz.)
  • Potato Chips (ideally "nori shio" seaweed and salt flavor, otherwise plain salt chips), 15 g (0.5 oz)
  • Onion, 1/4
  • Pea shoots (tōmyō in Japanese or dou miao in Chinese 豆苗 ), 30 g (1 oz.)
  • Soy sauce, 1 tsp.
  • Torigara chicken soup stock powder, 1/2 tsp.
  • Raw ginger, finely grated, 1 tsp.
  • Sesame oil, 1 tbsp.
  • 1 egg (pasteurized*), yolk

Instructions

  • 1. Chop onion
  • 2. Cut off pea shoot roots (discard or set aside*), cut shoots into 2 cm (3/4") pieces.
  • 3. In a frying pan, add sesame oil and grated ginger.
  • 4. Simmer on low heat until ginger is fragrant, then add chopped onion.
  • 5. Cook on medium heat until onion is soft, then add cooked rice, soy sauce, stock powder, and half of pea shoots.
  • 6. Cook until all ingredients are ingredients are well blended, crumble potato chips by hand and add them in. Quickly blend ingredients, transfer to a plate making fried rice into a mountain, and make a dimple on top.
  • 7. Decorate the remaining pea shoots around the edges of the dimple, and pour egg yolk into dimple. Serve.

Itadakimasu!

Note 1: In Japan, raw eggs are safe. If you can't get pasteurized eggs where you live, you have three choices: either pasteurize them at home (by cooking the yolk slowly, mixed with a bit of water or milk, in a saucepan to 160°F, then immediately placing the saucepan in ice water to cool), buy a liquid egg replacement, or do without egg entirely.

Note 2: Pea shoots are hydroponic and can be easily grown at home. Simply save the roots and place them in water in a container. Hina has them growing in a makeshift container made from a plastic bottle. New shoots will grow within a week.
