Japanese Voices: YuNi no All Night Nippon i – Episode 11

Japanese Voices 日本語のままクールジャパン is a regular series designed for learners of Japanese to enjoy real Japanese language programming from Nippon Broadcasting System, one of the biggest commercial radio stations in Japan.

In our second round, we bring you YuNi no All Night Nippon i YuNiのオールナイトニッポンi, a show on the web radio platform All Night Nippon i オールナイトニッポンi.
With virtual singer YuNi as host, YuNi no All Night Nippon i is a fun and entertaining radio show, comprising a longer live portion on the Vtuber live streaming platform Colon: and a shorter archive-only segment available exclusively on the All Night Nippon i site. YuNi occasionally invites other Virtual Youtubers to join her.

Episode 11: YuniPon Hard Mode

Ohamonii~
Welcome to another episode of YuNi no All Night Nippon i
This week, YuNi is by herself in the studio, giving her best shot at YuniPon Hard Mode.

YuniPon is a popular corner on the live portion of YuNi no All Night Nippon i where your favorite virtual singer has to talk about a subject selected at random from a gachapon (capsule toy dispenser) within one minute (without looking at her watch). In Hard Mode, she has to talk for twice as long and still manage to finish up exactly at the two minute mark.

Topic 1: Movies you want to watch in summer

YuNi was excited about Mamoru Hosoda's film "Summer Wars." It was broadcast on Japanese TV recently and YuNi recorded it since she's a big fan. YuNi thinks that the world of Summer Wars could one day become reality and we should make sure AI doesn't gain too much control. During the broadcast, like many people around the nation, YuNi Tweeted out a famous line from the movie in sync with the scene. Can you guess what it is? (Hint: It's just like Balse in "Laputa")

Topic 2: Roller Coaster

YuNi loves roller coasters, especially the ones which are full of thrills. For example, she rode on Fujiyama at Fuji-Q Highland three times in a row. She has a hard time with drop towers, though, which make her feel nauseous. Apparently, your natural instinct is to hold your breath before the drop, but you should exhale instead. That worked wonders for YuNi, and she recommends it to her listeners too!

This time, YuNi went past the 2-minute mark on the first topic and maybe the second one too. YuNi glanced at her director in the studio for confirmation again, but just like last time, he made a sour face.

There's always next time!

This week's nihongo tip

  • Japanese: よろしくお願いします
  • English transliteration: yoroshiku onegai shimasu
  • Meaning: "Nice to meet you" / "Please help me" / "Yes, please" / "I'm counting on you", etc.

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu which was a famous line in Summer Wars, also happens to be one of those quintessential Japanese phrases which can be used in multiple situations. Let's look at a few:

Pattern 1: Self-introductions

  • 私はジョンです。よろしくお願いします
  • Watashi wa John desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
  • I'm John. Nice to meet you.

Pattern 2: Showing gratitude for something someone will do

  • Delivery person bringing in a new washing machine: ここでいいですか? You: はい、よろしくお願いします
  • Koko de ii desu ka? | Hai, yoroshiku onegai shimasu
  • Is it OK here? | Yes, please.
