Rainych is an Indonesian singer who’s gained a following for covering Japanese songs or singing Japanese versions of popular English songs. She currently has over 1.2 million subscribers on her Youtube channel, and has even caught the attention of artists like The Weeknd and Doja Cat who have praised her covers of their songs.
In one of her most recent releases, she sang a cover of Miki Matsubara’s hit single “Mayonaka no Door (真夜中のドア) ~ Stay with me”. The song was released by the Japanese songstress in 1979 and has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Matsubara’s single is one of the more popular songs that came out of Japan’s “city pop” era in the late 1970s and 1980s, which was defined as having an “urban sound” influenced by Western jazz and R&B.

Rainych’s cover retains the smooth feel of the original, while also sounding more modern and suited to her light vocals. The arrangement for the cover was done by Natsuki Harada, the vocalist and composer of the Japanese band, evening cinema. The city pop-inspired music video was directed by DiAN, a multimedia creator from Beijing, making the release a creative collaboration between three countries.
