Overview
Kokura Shima Shima Co., Ltd. 株式会社 小倉縞縞, a company based in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka, designing and selling contemporary interpretations of Kokura-ori 小倉織 textiles*, is holding a simultaneous online and offline "Scrap Fabric Sale" this year to sell leftover cloth from the manufacturing process, leftover strips and selvage from the weaving process, and even factory straps which aren't normally used. In so doing, the company hopes to convey the essence of Japanese textiles while promoting sustainable manufacturing.
Kokura-ori was a unique cotton textile, woven in a vertical striped pattern, produced at the beginning of the 17th century by the feudal clan of the Kokura area in southern Japan.
In addition, the company plans to have a "Shima Shima Creators Contest" online. The judges represent a variety of fields such as educators, popular designers, and artists.

Through this initiative, Kokura Shima Shima hopes to promote sustainable manufacturing and encourage people to enjoy participating in the process in which products are recycled and upcycled.
Last year, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, the company held the sale online for the first time, which was very popular because it allowed customers from distant places who could not visit the store to purchase Kokura-ori leftover fabric.
This year, now that there are signs that the pandemic is waning in Japan, customers will be able to purchase the items in the store as well as online.
