A video taken at the Buddhist temple Ekō-in 恵光院 in the impressive Kōyasan 高野山 (Mount Kōya) temple settlement, a part of the UNESO World Heritage Site known as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," has been receiving a lot of attention.
January to March is university entrance exam season in Japan. In spite of the pandemic, examinations are being held as usual in many universities and colleges.
To show their support for students doing their best in the face of such difficulties, famous Japanese brand Morinaga Seika Co., Ltd. made a special edition of their popular long-selling ramune candy called 合格祈願ラムネ (gōkaku kigan ramune "Ramune Praying for Success") and released it for a limited time in early January 2022.
Each package, filled with extra-large ramune pieces, is imbued with the Ekō-in priests' prayers for the student's success.
To promote this fact and help the candy reach the students for whom they were intended, Morinaga Seika filmed this video at Ekō-in:
The video begins with an austere mood befitting a Buddhist temple, but then an EDM track kicks in and the priest breaks out some sharp moves.
The main dancer is Ryushin Takiyama, an active priest as well as a dancer and dance teacher.
The other people in black robes aren't priests but actually Religion Course students at Kōyasan High School.
The striking video seems to have struck a chord with many people, eliciting comments such as:
Hopefully, it helped some students take a much-needed break and provided them some encouragement as well!
