How do you peel oranges?

I often peel them with a knife because I don't like getting orange peel under my nails, but I've always felt that it's a bother and wondered if there was another easier way of doing it.

That's when I learned that I could peel oranges, tangerines, grapefruits and other citrus fruits easily and quickly if I used a certain little item that's usually in my kitchen!

All you need is an orange, of course, a pair of scissors and... a bread clip!

These convenient little gizmos can sometimes come in handy so I actually have a little box in the kitchen where I store them whenever I buy bread. I've sometimes used them to tie small plastic bags, to bookmark recipe books, etc.

However, I had no idea you could use them to peel fruit! Here's what you do:

Just cut the bread clip down the middle. This creates the perfect tool for peeling your orange. In fact, it creates two of them!

Press the pointy end that looks like a hook down into the orange peel. While keeping downward pressure on the hook, drag it along the peel to make your cut.

Cut all the way around the orange, turn the orange one half-rotation, then cut all the way around the orange again. This will divide the peel into quarters.

When I peeled it from one of the quarters, it came off cleanly without much effort. The other quarters also came off easily and before I knew it, the job was done!

No need to get your knife dirty and no need to waste time!

Since I love eating citrus fruits in summer, it looks like I have one more reason to keep those bread clips handy in my kitchen. Maybe you can give this lifehack a try too!

Citrus peel also has its uses, by the way. I like to use them to de-grease my stove top, dry them, chop them up, and use them to flavor tea, or I mix them with bay leaves, cloves, black cardamom, star anise and Szechuan pepper to flavor hot chili oil. But that's a story for another day...
