Summer festivals in Japan are marked by delicious street food, spectacular fireworks shows, and some fun carnival-type games. One other way to celebrate you may notice as making your way down the street is children wearing colorful masks. These take the form of many characters from Japanese folklore and theater, but one in particular is the kitsune, or fox mask. Worn often at Shinto festivals and seen as both tricksters and divine messengers in Japanese legends, the fox mask makes for a striking look.
Typically the type children wear have more of a cute aesthetic going for them, but as Twitter user Emmama (@Emma_201710) found out recently, sometimes things look different than you expect them to. When taking a trip to a local summer festival, she decided to buy some fox masks for her four-year-old child and their friend. When taking a picture of them in their new gear, they felt as if they had been transported into a survival horror game:
"Come play with us..."

"We went to a summer festival with a friend and I bought them masks, and the picture turned into a scene from a horror game lol."
A combination of the masked children's lazy pose, the red banners, and temple background made the memorable snapshot seem like something a lot more terrifying. Many on Twitter found the coincidental scary shot adorable, but just couldn't help but compare it to horror movies and games in the replies:
"This looks like a Japanese take on The Shining. If I saw this in person I wouldn't be able to go to the restroom."
"Scary but cute! It looks like twin boss characters summoned from the other world in a horror video game."
"The choice of masks is wonderful. They give off an incredible aura of darkness...!"
