The bustling Tokyo neighborhood of Shibuya is known for its eclectic mix of dining options, but also for its trendy eateries. Although the hot dog may not be the first thing you think of when you hear the words "trendy eatery," a recent addition to the neighborhood may change your mind.
Opening in June 2022, the Baby Hotdog cafe was born from the idea of taking the simple, familiar hotdog and elevating it to a more luxurious and indulgent food. The cafe's hotdogs are overseen by 浦口司 Tsukasa Uraguchi, sous chef at the two-Michelin star restaurant Arbor in Hong Kong, and feature unique and high-quality ingredients such as homemade sausages, butter-infused hotdog buns, and toppings such as salsa, chili con carne, curry, and mushrooms.
The Baby Hotdog Cafe offers nine different hot dog varieties, each with its own unique flavor profile. The BABY Signature Salt Dog is, as the name indicates, the cafe's signature offering, featuring a simple seasoning that allows the flavor of the sausage and the bread to shine through.
In addition to the classic hot dog and their signature hot dog, their regularly changing lineup of hot dog varieties is sure to entertain and satisfy you with inspirations from all over the world such as curry from India, Quattro Formaggi pizza from Italy, and teriyaki from Japan.
Of course, condiments like relish, chopped onions, ketchup, and mustard are also available. Hot dogs can be ordered a la carte or in a set with cole slaw and a soft drink. Takeout and delivery are also available.
If you're thirsty, Baby Hotdog Cafe also offers a unique drink menu, including their "Mojito Coffee." This refreshing drink is made by mixing coffee and mint, creating a perfect balance of bitterness and freshness that complements the hotdogs perfectly.
While you're there, you'll also appreciate the unique interior design, inspired by an American video rental shop from the 1980s and 90s. Vintage TVs playing clips and a wall of VHS tapes help add to the mood.
In short, the Baby Hotdog Cafe offers a unique and delicious take on the humble hotdog with high-quality ingredients, creative toppings, and unique drinks. If you're in the Shibuya area and looking for something new to try, be sure to check it out!
