While we have seen bits and pieces of the upcoming Godzilla film from Japan, Shin-Gojira, or Godzilla: Resurgence, as it is titled in English, we've yet to see this new terrifying take on the King of the Monsters in action. Co-directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan), Godzilla: Resurgence, the makers claim that this is the scariest version of Godzilla yet, and one look at his nightmarish maw released in the new trailer will confirm that.

The new trailer comes with the information that the movie features 328 total cameos and appearances, with a cast headlined by Satomi Ishihara, Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Kengo Kora, Ren Osugi, and many more. While the trailer features no dialogue, it's ominous music and the legendary monster's sinister aesthetic back the film's tagline: "Godzilla vs. Japan"
Aside from the gnarled and menacing look Godzilla is sporting, the most notable takeaway from the trailer is how freaking long his tail has become. Considering that it doesn't appear that this Godzilla is here to help Japan battle another monstrous invader and instead return to his destructive roots as the threat of nuclear power, it seems that his long tail will now be a weapon that goes hand in hand with his atomic breath.
While we are sure the new look Godzilla (particularly the face) is rather jarring to some fans, both veteran and casual alike, it's an exciting and fitting return for the King of Monsters to be thrashing Japan again, causing nightmares in all new ways. TOHO’s latest endeavor will be bringing Godzilla back to the big screen in Japan on July 23rd, 2016, when Godzilla: Resurgence hits theaters.
