It's never a surprise when Japan releases cola flavors that one may find a bit ambitious, and even when it comes to what is considered to be the traditional staple of Japanese cuisine, sushi, things can still get pretty inventive. What many seem to misunderstand about sushi, however, is that raw fish is not a necessary ingredient mandated by anybody in the Japanese cooking world. Sushi is simply madefrom using shari (しゃり), or sushi rice, and neta (ネタ), the topping. So while that topping can be anything, sushi rice is essentially the core of the dish. It's so important that popular conveyor belt sushi chain (kaitenzushi) Kura Sushi is introducing curry bread and cola made from sushi rice.

Curry bread, which is essentially fried bread filled with Japanese curry, is a popular hot snack in Japan. Kura Sushi previously released a curry plate at their restaurants which featured actual sushi rice as opposed to the rice found in ordinary curries. Now that same curry is being sandwiched between two pieces of fried bread, providing customers with a burger of hot curry different from your standard curry bread. It's also made freshly from when you order it.

The Sushi Rice Cola borrows from the traditional Japanese drink amazake, which is a sweet type of sake made from fermented rice, is usually low in alcohol or completely alcohol free. It has a gentle sweetness and mellowness to the flavor, and also has the added bonus of a healthy image, as amazake contains 9 amino acids not produced by the human body. Using rice and amazake from the oldest brewery in Kyoto, Kura Sushi is hoping that the world's first cola made from rice and vinegar will be a nutritious summer drink when it goes on sale July 29th.
