If you have spent a certain length of time in Japan or happen to be a fruit enthusiast who always samples local fruits when traveling abroad, you may have had the good fortune to encounter Amaou strawberries. Once you have tried them, you will never think of strawberries the same way again. Remarkably sweet and fragrant, juicy and plump, they are prized by strawberry lovers and at their most expensive, can even fetch prices as elevated as $5 for a single strawberry.

The problem with Amaou strawberries is you are often limited to how many you can eat, either because they are expensive or one does not usually buy a prodigious amount at the same time. You can enjoy all kinds of sweets buffets in Japan, even ones with deserts such as strawberry shortcake, fruit salads, or parfaits, which may include one or two strawberries. However, to our knowledge, there has never been an all-you-can-eat buffet where you can feast on whole Amaou strawberries in addition to other strawberry-filled desserts.
Thankfully, your strawberry-indulgent prayers have been answered! Beginning on January 15 and continuing until April 1, at the "Daichi no Okurimono" natural food buffet restaurant in the Ueno neighborhood of Tokyo, there will be a new section at the dessert table as part of their "Fresh Amaou All-You-Can-Eat Strawberry-Packed Sweets Fair."
