Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is one of the most popular tourist spots in the area. The sprawling shrine is most famous for its path of striking red torii gates and bamboo forest, and is routinely at the top of the highest ranked spots in Japan by travelers. Now thanks to Matt Newell, fans of the renowned shrine can explore it in a beautiful new way. His new project is an immersive journey of the famous red gates using the Unreal Engine 4.
Newell explains the detail of the map, which can also be enjoyed with a VR headset:
The map is very extensive to explore with shrine gates laid out over the entire mountainside. I've tried to include a lot of variance in different parts of the mountain, with lots of points of interest to discover and many branching/intertwining paths to encourage you to make choices with your exploration. Take photos with the in-game camera, customize the soundtrack, walk around at your own pace. There is a checklist of locations to find as well as some hidden areas, and also a small ending.
Check out the immersive and atmospheric video below, which allows you to explore Fushimi Inari Taisha without any tourists. It can be downloaded for free from Newell's site, but he appreciates any support as well.
