Japanese digital art collective teamLab have become known for their elaborate and stunning exhibits which create an art experience like no other. They combine digital art and other technology with physical spaces, and interactivity plays a massive part in their work.

teamLab have their own permanent art museums in Tokyo, such as ‘MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM: teamLab Borderless’, located in Odaiba. Their ambitious installations allow photographers to get awesome, otherworldly shots, and these immersive exhibitions are getting a spring makeover for the coming season.

One of their most photogenic exhibitions, ‘The Forest of Resonating Lamps’, will take on the classic sakura pink in tribute to Japan’s most beloved spring phenomenon, cherry blossoms. The interactive artwork is affected by visitors, and when they stand close to a lamp it shines brightly and causes the surrounding lamps to change too in a chain reaction.

Other intallations have been transformed too, using a mix of spring colours and seasonal flora. Memory of Topography will be filled with flowers that usually bloom in March and April such as cherry blossom, rapeseed flowers, lavender and wisteria.

Even the museum’s teahouse has a seasonal twist. When you buy tea or ice cream off the menu, both are transformed as you consume them through the magic of projection mapping. Rapeseed flowers will bloom in March and cherry blossoms will appear in April, while white butterflies can be seen enjoying the branches that stretch out from the ice cream.

These special spring twists added to the existing exhibitions can only be experienced between March and May and start and finish on different days. The closing days of the museum itself are also somewhat irregular so be sure to check ahead of time on the official website.
