Located inside one of the Hobbit hole cubbies that form the exterior of the Shiroiya Hotel, Shiroiya the Pâtisserie may be small but their fruit tarts are anything but. Although the pastry shop was opened as part of the artsy Gunma hotel’s services, their specialty in fruit tarts has earned them customers outside of the hotel’s guests.

This summer, they added two new fruit tarts that show how they have no qualms about packing in as much fruit as they can in just one serving. The Shine Muscat Tart (1,100 yen/piece, 8,300 yen whole) forms a hypnotizingly intricate pattern from the Shine Muscat cultivar of grapes. The creamy layer underneath serves to add a different dimension of sweetness to the tart.

Their other new offering is the Tropical Coconut Mousse Tart (900 yen/piece, 7,000 yen whole), a colorful amalgamation of fruits such as mango, pineapple, kiwi, and raspberries. The mousse has a subtle coconut flavor, and the tart’s dough is swimming in mango, pineapple, and caramelized banana chutney.
