If you love cute characters recreated in food form, Japan is truly the place to be. There's cafes and events announced throughout the year, starring characters from companies like San-X, the creators of super popular characters such as Rilakkuma.
A group of San-X’s creations who have a recently opened a pop-up cafe is Sumikko Gurashi. They’re known for enjoying ‘life in the corner’ and their shy charms have been recreated in various dishes. The cafe has appeared, to celebrate the release of a Sumikko Gurashi film, in three major Japanese cities, namely Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.
The cute, magical nighttime theme is inspired by the animated movie. The menu items include plenty of cute motifs to express this, like witch hats and stars. Both can be seen in the Tokage Night Party Curry (1430 yen).
And other main dishes like Shirokuma’s warm doria and side salad (1430 yen).
But the desserts take the cute, pastel theme to another level with the colourful açai bowl (1430 yen).
The ‘Blue Moonlit Night Fruit Punch’ can even be customised by adding on more character ice cream scoops to create your perfect gang (1100 yen plus 200 yen for each extra ice cream scoop).
The characters’ magic can even be witnessed by ordering the colourful and starry beverages which grace the menu (990 yen). The cotton candy topping will disappear before your very eyes!
The cafe also has plenty of charming original merchandise on offer, starring all the lovable critters.
The cafes located in Tokyo and Osaka will be open until 5th December 2021, while the Nagoya branch will stick around until 12th December. Check out the website for the full menu and to reserve a table.
