Sumikko Gurashi is a lineup of super cute characters from San-X, whose name translates to ‘life in the corner’. These characters are linked by their shy and retiring personalities meaning they prefer to locate themselves in the corners of rooms, sofas, and so on.
Sumikko Gurashi are made to appeal to introverted people, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going all out for their 10th anniversary. A pop-up cafe will be opening up from next month, in both Tokyo and Osaka. The adorable, summery menu will include main meals, desserts, and drinks, all inspired by various Sumikko Gurashi characters.
The mains include a ‘10th Anniversary Celebration Hamburg Plate’ with rice that can be made in the shape of a character of your choice.
The ‘Refreshing Lemon Fish Fry Plate’ offers the same option of a rice character.
And the tomato cream pasta is topped with a cute Sumikko Gurashi character made from sour cream.
For desserts, there’s a shaved ice piled up high and made to look like a character.
The ice cream desserts change flavour depending on which character you select. Shirokuma is lemon sherbert, Penguin? is matcha, Tonkatsu is caramel flavour, Neko is vanilla, and Tokage is expressed with blue salt.
The adorable beverages include milk drinks.
Or hot cafe lattes with charming latte art.
But if sitting in a cafe surrounded by people does seem like too much for Sumikko Gurashi fans, there’s actually a takeout menu too. It includes cute character ice cream cones.
There’s also bottled drinks to take home.
Of course, the cafe will also have plenty of 10th anniversary merchandise to commemorate the occasion.
The Tokyo location will be open from 1st July to 4th September on the first floor of Sky Tree Town Solamachi in Box Cafe&Space. The Osaka cafe will appear from 22nd July to 28th August at Abeno Contact on the fourth floor of Abeno Q’s Mall. Check out the website for more information!
