We can’t get enough of our usual cupcakes and ice cream cones, but when you’re in Japan, you can bet that there will be an amazing pastry chef out there that will turn your standard dessert into something both artistic and delicious.
Remember the Raindrop Cake (inspired by Japanese Mizu Shingen Mochi) that became a huge hit in New York? Well now there’s a new kind of dessert in town, one that is equally unique and worthy of your tastebuds.
The “Kokedama Ice” made by pastry chefs at the Oirase Keiryu Hotel in Aomori Prefecture is the next in line for odd but alluring desserts to try. It looks like a giant moss ball, but it’s actually matcha ice cream covered with spinach powder, sitting in a beautiful pool of green apple puree.

The idea for the dessert came from the lush nature amongst which the hotel is situated. The area is abundant in moss, and hence the decision to use it as a model.
Available from June 1st to August 31st, 2016, you can try this delicious ball of ice cream moss for 1,300 yen (11.90 USD). You can order it at the “Legend of the Forest” lounge at the Oirase Keiryu Hotel, a lounge that couldn’t be more fitting for the reveal of the green dessert.

Will it become the “next Rainbow Cake?” We’re not sure yet, but there’s no debate that it’s just as intriguing, and perhaps gustatorily more satisfying.
