Walking through brilliantly illuminated streets is one of the most magical ways to enjoy the Japanese holidays, especially because over the years, more and more cities throughout the country have been stepping their illumination game up with various themes and attractions to accompany their dazzling displays. Shibuya is no exception, and the famous city has taken its popular Yoyogi Park area and transformed it into an iridescent expanse of blue lights themed after Italy’s Blue Grotto.

Additional features will make their appearance during Christmastime, and this year’s Shibuya White Christmas will welcome guests to walk down a 750-meter path decorated and illuminated with blue and white lights, Christmas trees, and other holiday decoration. It could be a romantic destination for couples in love, or a festive way for friends and family to spend the special season.
You can also get a sparkling start to the new year at the New Year Walk and take a stroll from Shibuya to the Meiji Shrine. This event will be held from 5PM on December 31st until 5AM on January 1st.
The standard Blue Grotto Christmas illumination will be held in Yoyogi Park until January 9th, 2017, giving prospective visitors plenty of time to schedule an evening under the breathtaking illuminations. The light-up will begin at 5PM every day, and will continue to glow throughout the night until 11PM. Get more information on the event’s website.
