Walk the streets of any country where Starbucks has planted its roots and you’re bound to see the familiar green logo beckoning passersby to have a cup of coffee every which way. While most of these locations look similar inside and out regardless of where they are found, time and time again there are special Starbucks stores built inside buildings of historical and architectural prominence.

As a country where its many regions are always looking for ways to pay respects to their local cultures and traditions, Japan is certainly no stranger to such uniquely designed Starbucks locations. The newest Starbucks of this kind is set to be in Kyoto, where people have been awaiting the opening of the world’s first tatami-style Starbucks along the bustling Ninenzaka street, which tourists might recognize as the narrow road leading to the famous Kiyomizudera Temple. Scheduled to open on June 30th, 2017, this new store will be offering a one-of-a-kind Japanese experience in one of the biggest coffee chains in the world.

Located inside a century-old traditional Japanese dwelling, visitors will be able to spot the cafe by the image of the wavy-haired siren on a blue noren (traditional Japanese fabric dividers). Past the noren is a bar counter and 3 courtyards on the first floor, while on the second floor are 3 tatami-style rooms where guests can take off their shoes and relax with a refreshing drink and snack.

For any visitor looking to experience an elegant marriage of traditional Japan and modern coffee culture, it might be worth heading over to this newest Starbucks location. It should be noted that it is situated in a highly crowded street of Kyoto, so those making a visit should expect long lines especially on days following its grand opening.
