Men's beauty media site BiDAN, operated by beauty business company Clafill Japan, is currently holding Japan's first ever contest to decide who is "the country's most handsome man in makeup."

Between now and February 24th 17:00 (JST), the general public can submit their votes to decide which of the seven finalists will take home the Grand Prize in the Meiku Danshi no Misutaa Contesuto メイク男子ミスターコンテスト (literally, "Male Beauty Contest for Men in Makeup").

    • What got you started?: I was already interested in skin care and hair styling and when I was looking into ways I could become more good-looking, my friend told me about makeup videos on YouTube.
    • What do you aim for with your makeup?: I try to wear makeup which is natural but which makes me feel a bit more confident when I look in the mirror.
    • Name some reasons why you're glad you started wearing makeup: I gained more confidence than I had before and I expanded my fashion range.
    • What reactions have you gotten from your wearing makeup?: Men: The most common reaction is: "Why do you do it?" or "Do you need to do that?" Rather than negating, most men just directly question my motivation for wearing makeup. / Women: They tell me: "I don't see why not," "I think it looks good," or "No way."       • What got you started?: I was a professional magician and at first, I put on makeup for dramatic stage effect, but then I realized that being different than my usual self actually gave me confidence! Ever since then, I always wear makeup in my everyday life.
      • What do you aim for with your makeup?: Makeup which makes my skin look beautiful and conveys a clean look.
      • Name some reasons why you're glad you started wearing makeup: So many people compliment me on my beautiful skin, which makes me happy!
      • What reactions have you gotten from your wearing makeup?: Men: They often say: "I didn't notice. I didn't know you were wearing makeup." / Women: They often tell me: "Your makeup is cute," and "Your skin is beautiful"!

        • What got you started?: Since I was thinking of becoming a model, I looked into it and discovered that I'd need makeup skills. So, I learned how to put on makeup (but I ended up not being a model).

          • What reactions have you gotten from your wearing makeup?: It depends on who I ask. Some people say I look cool, others say it creeps them out but I don't really care what others think. Men: They often tell me I creep them out or they call me an okama (a term for gay man which is often pejorative, especially when used outside of the Japanese LGBT community) / Women: They often say I look handsome, but sometimes they'll say something like: "no way."

            • What got you started?: I was influenced by a musician I liked.
            • What do you aim for with your makeup?: No matter where I go, I always wear makeup appropriate for the time, place and occasion. At the office, I aim for makeup which gives the impression of a natural, dignified look. Day to day, I use makeup to create my own individual look using eye shadow and colored contact lenses.

              • What got you started?: I admired V's face in BTS.
              • What do you aim for with your makeup?: I try to make sure it doesn't look like a girl's makeup (cute)
              • Name some reasons why you're glad you started wearing makeup: I've gained confidence in myself, I have a broader range of topics to talk about with girls, and there are more floors I can visit in department stores.
              • What reactions have you gotten from your wearing makeup?: Men: There are some negative reactions but most men praise me. Some of them have even considered wearing makeup after meeting me, which is the happiest reaction I could hope for. / Women: They really like it. The cosmetics I use are mostly Korean brands, so I get the most praise from girls who are into Korean things.
