Last year was the 45th anniversary of the icon of cuteness herself, Hello Kitty, and Japan saw an influx of adorable collaboration cafes and menu items, such as Sanrio tea parties, and even a Harajuku Kawaii Monster Cafe crossover.
But sadly, since most of these cafes took place in major cities, country-side dwelling Sanrio fans were often left out of the celebrations.
But 2020 is off to a strong start for character fans, as Sanrio have collaborated with sweets maker Domremy to create some super cute sweets which have gone on sale in local convenience stores and supermarkets, bringing a range of sweet My Melody desserts to the masses.
Of course, compared to the cafe collaborations, these little treats are also much more affordable and can be enjoyed at home. All three are strawberry flavoured.
The first of these fruit-filled treats is the strawberry pudding a la mode, made up of strawberry milk jelly, strawberry milk pudding. The pudding's berry-licious topping contains a chunky strawberry sauce and strawberry cookies. The My Melody face printed on the packaging comes in several different cute expressions.
The next one is much of the same, so if you don’t like strawberries, look away now. The strawberry parfait contains both strawberry jelly and strawberry milk mousse covered on strawberry sauce.
For something a bit more spongey, go for the strawberry pudding roll. This kawaii creation consists of a strawberry pudding rolled up all snug in a fluffy pink sponge cake.
These sweets are currently available in supermarkets all over Japan, and selected convenience stores. But if you're still in need of the full collaboration cafe experience, there's one final anniversary celebration in honour of Hello Kitty, going on until January 13th in Osaka.
