Compared to the West, traditions like Obon make the possibility of haunting visitors feel more likely. During the three-day festival, residents celebrate the return of their deceased ancestor's spirits to the land of the living.
The phenomena of kodokushi and jiko bukken further drive the point home. As kodokushi 孤独死 , solitary deaths, increase in Japan, they create in their wake jiko bukken 事故物件, incident properties. These properties are considered quasi-condemned, as the deceased's spirits are believed to remain inhabiting them in some cases.
