Kaiju fans around the world were delighted when Nijigen no Mori, a theme park based on Japan's Awaji Island, announced it was constructing a 120-meter-long (393-foot) Godzilla statue that would see park guests take the role of explorers zip-lining through the gaping maw and body of the King of the Monsters. Now the attraction has officially opened (as of October 10th), and we have a good look at what it's like to jump into the belly of the beast--as well as other Godzilla themed food and attractions on hand.
The above videos come from an open press event, but the entire facility is now open as of October 10th to the general public. The attraction, titled the "Godzilla Interception Operation ~National Awaji Institute of Godzilla Disaster~“, sees park guests take the role of island researchers who must zip-line into the body of a strategically frozen Godzilla (sporting the aesthetic of the King of the Monsters in Godzilla: Resurgence) as well as play a shooting game where they destroy scattered Godzilla cells.
Visitors will first be treated to a story video overseen by Toho films, which explains the strategy and background of the mission. The video also features Japanese actress Hirona Yamazaki, who will be in the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Monster Hunter, as well as Satoru Matsuo, who eappeared in Godzila: Resurgance (Shin-Gojira).
As researchers, you'll then proceed to zip-line on two courses: "Internal entry course (162m)" and "Body surface monitoring course (152m) which allow you to both dive deep inside Godzilla as well as take in his giant frozen body from all angles.
The attraction also sets up the world's first permanent "Godzilla Museum" which features a centerpiece diorama of the "battle of Tokyo Station" from Godzilla: Resurgence, with actual movie models. The museum will features over 100 monster models, including official movie prototypes and materials from the Toho Visual Art Collection. An adjacent gift shop will sell over 200 limited-edition items.
Next to the gift shop, a cafe sells Godzilla-inspired foods, such as a black Godzilla curry with chili oil and locally harvested onions (Awaji Island is famous for its sweet and aromatic onions) as well as a Godzilla Burger, a bacon & tomato, and fried ham cutlet burger that replicates the behemoth's lengthy tail. It's written using the kanji 呉爾羅, which was used to refer to Godzilla in the folklore explained in Godzilla: Resurgence.
You can check out a few more videos of the attraction from the official press day, as well as access information below.
