Pokémon Co. Ltd, have announced that their newest game ‘Pokémon Snap’ will be released on Nintendo Switch from 30 April 2021.
The game is a further development of the original Pokémon Snap that was released on Nintendo 64 in 1999, and will see players test their skills as a Pokémon research photographer and help investigate the Lentil region.

In the game, players will take on the role of a photographer, working under Professor Kagami to investigate wild Pokémon on various islands in the ‘Lentil Region’. Each of the islands come with their own environments, such as overgrown jungles, vast deserts, and ocean biomes. The player will explore the different areas in a railed pod-type vehicle known as Neo One and take photos of the Pokémon that they encounter on their journey.
The photos you take will be evaluated by Professor Kagami, with your score varying depending on the Pokémon pose, how close you can get, whether they’re facing the camera and their position in the frame. As with photography in real life, the more you practice, the more skilled you will become.
Your photos will then be added to a photo book. As you progress through the game, the Pokémon behaviour may change, and you might be able to add to your research with new Pokémon facial expressions and actions.
In Pokémon Snap, there are more than 200 species ready to be discovered. To entice the Pokémon out and to capture different reactions, you can use ‘fluffy apple’ fruit, an edible treat that seems to be a Pokémon favourite.
The island's inhabitant Pokémon adapt to their environments in different ways. Whilst some live in groups and establish territories, others wander the island alone. The game’s website recommends hiding discreetly to take the best Pokémon research photos.
Additionally, the region heralds a strange phenomenon, known as Illumina, whereby some Pokémon emit a mysterious glow. As well as gathering photos of Lentil region Pokémon, you are also tasked with helping Professor Kagami to investigate the Illumina phenomenon.
