Key Coffee Co., Ltd., a Japanese coffee company with a hundred-year history, is launching its second collaboration project with fashion store The Shop TK.

The world of nostalgic Showa Era jun-kissa coffee shops

The jun-kissa 純喫茶 (literally "pure coffee shop"), now a rare breed, is a type of traditional Japanese coffee shop that became popular in Showa Era. We have introduced a few of them here at grape Japan. For example, Café Benisica in Tokyo's Yūrakuchō district, the birthplace of Japanese pizza toast, Meikyoku Kissaten Lion in Shibuya, where talking is banned and classical music is celebrated, and Café Paulista in Ginza, Japan's oldest still-operating Western-style coffee shop.

For the second collaboration, Key Coffee asked Rina Namba, director of the Tokyo Coffee Shop Research Institute, to carefully select photogenic jun-kissa shops. Namba has visited over 2,000 jun-kissa so far, so she's eminently qualified to choose the best ones. Photographer Toshiaki Kitaoka beautifully captured images conveying a nostalgic coffee-time feeling. The end result is a fashionable apparel lineup.

An original t-shirt series with photos from jun-kissa coffee shops (珈琲亭ルアン Coffee House Rouen, 甲州屋 Kōshūya and COFFEE SHOP ギャラン Coffee Shop Galant in Tokyo, and クラウン Crown in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture) printed on the front, selected by Rina Namba.
