The long-tailed tit, called shima enaga in Japanese, is definitely in the running for cutest bird species in Japan. These fluffy little birds are found on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, and their charm is so legendary that they even have a very popular Twitter page dedicated to various recreations of them.
They’ve documented shima enaga mochi, as well as rice balls. But this interesting edible tribute combines both the super cute bird species and a Japanese youth subculture at the same time. The bird is ingeniously dressed up as a ‘yanki’, a word for a juvenile delinquent with a particular set of aesthetics.

Although the look is a bit outdated now, the classic yanki fashion consists of a dark coloured jacket and a pompadour hairstyle.

In this dish, the jacket is recreated with a sheet of seaweed, and the hairstyle can be represented through a sausage or a deep fried shrimp.

Since the shima enaga is usually portrayed as cute, it’s nice to see an edgy side, and the Twitter post attracted plenty of attention. Many commenters even stated they were planning to do their own recreation of this iconic look in their curry too.
