While Japan has an absolute abundance of vending machines, Twitter user 606 (@bumWings) is dead set on reaching one that their access to has been thwarted by the elements for weeks.
606 has captivated many on Twitter with daily updates on their quest to buy Gun gun Gurt, a popular Japanese yogurt drink from a vending machine. They first began chronicling their daily struggles on December 28th, posting a picture of the situation saying "I couldn't buy Gun gun Gurt today". As you can see, 606 lives in an area of Japan currently hit by heavy snowfall.

Even though 606 can place coins in the machine, the bottom tray where the drinks are dispensed is blocked off by a wall of snow, making their Holy Grail of Gun gun Gurt inaccessible.
They went back on the 29th hoping the snow would have melted a bit...

...but no dice. Once again 606 braved the snow on the 30th, but it showed no sign of melting at all.

But 606 vowed that they would not to lose to the snow, and began checking in daily on the status of their prized yogurt drink--even with the snow getting worse.

Even the coin slot has been completely walled off at this point, prompting 606 to say "I'm embarrassed at my lack of foresight, when I was so excited about the signs a few days ago," and "I may never be able to buy Gun gun Gurt again."
Still, they persisted.

And yet after three weeks of vending machine pilgrimages, 606 was finally able to outlast the snow barrier on January 19th!
However, in a shocking twist, after all that struggle, 606 opted to buy a Dodekamin Strong energy drink instead of the Gun gun Gurt that launched their snowy odyssey to begin with.
The Twitter thread became a hotly followed viral topic in Japan, with many chiming in with daily interest:
"This turned into an outrageous drama."
"This thread is like watching society collapse."
"I'm so sorry, I can help but laugh."
