Japanese traditional sweets, or ‘wagashi’, are known for their exquisite taste and pristine presentation. But aside from the more classic-looking treats, you might be surprised to know that you can also get wagashi versions of popular characters. Even more surprisingly, these character-shaped sweets can be snapped up at your local convenience store.
Tabemasu is one confectionery brand that specialises in such character wagashi, and their sweets make limited-time-only appearances at stores from time to time.
Their latest sweet was created to celebrate the new movie ‘Minions: Rise of Gru’, which was released in Japan earlier this month.
Three adorable minions have been created for the collection in impressive detail and with three different fillings.
In a reference to the Minions’ favourite fruit, Bob has a banana-flavour filling, while Stuart has strawberry and Kevin has chocolate.
The type of wagashi used is 'nerikiri', a type of traditional sweet made from white bean paste and mochi dough. It can be easily coloured, moulded, and carved into various shapes, making it the perfect choice to create aesthetically pleasing confections such as these Minion creations.
These treats can be found in the chilled dessert section of Lawson convenience stores (not including Natural Lawson or Lawson 100) in Japan for 285 yen each.
