Kim Jung Gi is an artist from South Korea you should definitely know about. With amazing talent and a sharp eye for detail, he has been captivating audiences worldwide with his intricate artwork.
One of the most amazing things about Kim is his incredible memory — he can visualize drawings solely from mental pictures, and can draw without any photographic references.
“I observe things all the time,” he writes. “I don’t take references while I’m drawing, but I’m always collecting visual resources. I observe them carefully on daily basis, almost habitually. I study images of all sorts and genres.”
In one of his more recent works, he performed a three-hour live drawing of an extraordinary piece featuring all things Star Wars. From characters to ships, the Japanese/Star Wars mashup includes Star Wars characters from Episode I to Episode VI, as well as elements of feudal Japan.
With a closer look you’ll be able to see Storm Troopers in medieval battle armor, or men aiming blowguns from inside R2-D2.
This masterpiece isn’t the first large artwork Kim has worked on; in fact, he currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest drawing by a person. Having taken 5 days and approximately 20 hours to complete, it was a fisheye art illustration of Penang, an island off of Malaysia.
Though the live drawing was performed in October 2015, you can still enjoy the artwork in all its glory as three 12”x 12” prints. At 30 USD each, you can buy your favorite part of the scene, or all three for the entire work!
